Okay guys I aquired a 1988 trek 1000 a couple weeks ago, it's had a tune up, new tubes, tires, etc. I have a weird noise I thought was coming from the crank, but I get the noise even when I am not pedaling, when I am just coasting. I would cal it a clunk/grinding The rear hub has also had new bearings. the bike shifts fine. the wheels have been trued, and brakes seem to be working properly.

Here is what I have done so far:

removed reflector to see if it was making the noise
tightened pedals to see if that was the issue
tightened crank arms to see if that was the issue
tighhtened rear deraileur where it bolts to frame

None of these fixed the problem

The bike does not make the noise all the time, but frequent enough to cause me concern. It does not make the noise, just spinning the rear wheel, either direction, only when carrrying load (me). WHat am I missing guys and or gals???

New bearings in the hub doesn't necessarily mean it won't make noise. I would clean, lube, and adjust the rear hub and see if the noise goes away.

maybe I should call back the bike shop that did the tune up for me?
