Hi -

Any recos for a good local bike shop for a newbie. Looking for a bike (probably hybrid) to use on local roads both solo and with family... Would love to find one that also has good service / repairs / etc ... which you can't tell at all from the buying end of the transaction.

thanks

I'm a huge fan of Chris's Spoke and Wheel on East Main Street in Bridgeport. Chris has new bikes, good used bikes, and tons of parts, and I've always found him very knowledgable and honest. I can't say for sure how he is with people who don't know from bikes (I know a lot about bikes), but I did see him once answer questions from a lady who seemed completely clueless, and he was patient and pleasant. Also, he always gives me a good price on parts and service - it's always just exactly what I figured it would be, as opposed to a lot of other, more high-end shops, where things I think of as fairly straightforward get treated like something very complex and costly.

It's been about 12 years, but I used to live and ride in Stamford, and frequnted several - Greenwich Bikes and Cycle Center in Stamford. Dave's in Cos Cob. At this point, I can't vouch for them, but they used to be excellent.
