In a moment of inattention today I darn near killed myself.
I was stopped at a stoplight and looked down for a moment...when I looked back up I caught the glint of the green light to my right. My brain said "Oh...Green light!" and I started across the street. As I approached the median, I noticed the cars coming from my right were not stopping or slowing. Realizing my mistake, I got onto the median and dismounted...walking my bike the rest of the way across when the light actually DID turn green.
Finished my commute to work and shook for about 30 minutes at my desk.:twitchy:

To all of us that ride, let's remember that losing focus or getting distracted can end us in an instant.
I was very VERY lucky today.

Meh, just another day on the bike. These things happen and as long as you don't repeat a mistake, it's all good. ;)

It's not just a bicycle, it's an adventure!

Ok. I just freaked out a little. It's just that we've had at least 7 accidents and 2 deaths on the area.
It sucks when mortality raises it's cute little head.

I definitely understand that.......

remember, a few weeks ago, I was on the pavement with a shattered helmet ,trying to figure out "am I dead, yet?" like Sanka from "Cool Runnings". ;)

After a car turned in front of me without warning a fw weeks back, I was skittish about traffic for a few weeks. Now I'm even more cautious than I used to be, not fearing the traffic (well, maybe a little) but doing my best to stay out of potentially sticky situations.

You were. And I'm glad you were. Please be careful in the future.

I'm with Tom. As long as you are OK take it as a lesson learned.

I know what you mean though.I almost got doored riding home on Tuesday and I should know better, but I got comfortable and didn't see this guy just sitting in his car suddenly start opening the door. Good thing I am loud and had a little room to dodge a painful incident.

I did that in my truck on the way to work about a year ago. I was in the left turn lane and the light turned green. I for some reason thought it was a green arrow and jumped off the line! I realized my mistake and decided it was better to give more gas and get out of the way fast. But there was a teenager on a bike coming down the sidewalk, wanting to cross where I was trying to get out of the way. He had the "Walk" light, but thankfully saw what happened and waited for me.

I was shaking for the rest of the day! :twitchy:

Must have been the day for loss of concentration while commuting. I was going to post a tongue in cheek "Bike hits car" post myself. I hit a side mirror of a pickup on my way home yesterday with my shoulder while working my way up the line of cars at a red light. Instead of being slow and patient I figured I could cruise up the 2-3 foot gap between the cars and the sidewalk at 12 mph. Even saw that the truck was to far over and figured "heck, I can just duck under that mirror." Talk about a dumb idea. Luckily, it was a newer style mirror and it gave some when I gave it a glancing shoulder blow or I could have gone down right as the lght turned green.

So its not just you.

Here's a deal for you - You remember to make sure its your light that turned green before going through the intersection, and I'll stop trying to shoot ever shrinking gaps between cars and the sidewalk. Sound good?

Be safe out there!

I knew there was a good reason to run red lights. :)

Wheew! Sorry that I'm not the only one. (Was going to say "Glad", but the fewer of us making mistakes out there the better)

I'll take that deal!
