For the last 3 years I 've done a long distance run on New Years Day.
I don't celebrate on New Years eve so I'm ready to take advantage of New Years Day (light traffic).
The first year I biked from Hamilton to Toronto, Ontario. Last year I biked from Oshawa to Toronto and this year I circumnavigated the city of Toronto (around 100 kms).
Is there anyone else out there who forgoes the booze on New Years Eve and does a long run on January 1st?

Wasn't a real long run, but I rode 39 kilometers yesterday, up the escarpment then east to McNeilly Rd. in Winona then down the escarpment and back to East Hamilton. Feet started getting a little chilled, but a nice ride! I did a little celebrating New Year's Eve, but not enough to make me feel off in the morning.
I'm always in bed by 11 pm on New Year's Eve.
Yesterday (Jan 1, 2004) I did my usual ride to Stone Mountain. The weather was sunny and unusually warm (66F/19C). :)
Once I got to Stone Mountain I remembered that many Americans make New Year's resolutions to lose weight, get in shape, get more exercise, etc. So rather than the usual small crowd of cyclists, runners, walkers, etc. there were thousands of people wearing all sort of strange "costumes" to get the new year started "right".
There were 250-300 pound cyclists riding ill-fitting bikes, joggers wearing cutoff jeans and T-shirts (rather than regular running clothes), walkers wearing sweatsuits and a jacket (trying to sweat off 30 pounds??), people determined to climb the mountain in regular shoes, and most of these "new converts" didn't think to bring a water bottle.
Total miles for the day: 30.7

Rode to the coast as planned.. Did about 45 miles. Felt great. Cool at the start, nice upon the return..Rode about 4 hours. Great way to start out the year. On the way back cyclists were so thick on the bike path, it caused one to cut down your speed in order to be safe.

That's one thing about riding up here this time of year, it's not crowded at all. In an hour and a half of riding, I saw 2 other bikes, both guys on MTB's heading for trails. Temp was +3 C (37 F)when I rode in the morning, but warmed up to +7 (44F) in the afternoon - Great for this time of year!

I rode my Mountain Bike 18 miles on the trail early New Year's Morning. I also had plenty of beer the night before. Nothing like killing a hangover with a long bike ride in the cool air. I got home and felt better than ever.
Funny thing though, on the ride the sky was beautiful. There was this beautiful bank of white clouds that looked like an expansive range of snow covered cliffs. They kept rapidly moving away from me every time I looked at them. Not sure if this was an optical illusion or a result of the beer but it sure was cool. :D

I rode the coast of L.A. county, mostly on bike paths. It was a pleasant day with lots of cyclists. Wish I had ridden about 30 miles further up north..... Someone from the fixed gear mailing list this morning mentioned about drafting behind a couple of cyclists on the coast highway in Ventura County for several miles before finding out one of them was Lance Armstrong.

I set out to get semi-lost, but kept running into streets I knew, oh well. It still was a beautiful day for a ride, sunny, almost no wind, right around 40F/4C, and the roads were dry enough for me to take my road bike out. This year is looking good.

I rode with my bike club's annual New Year's Day Ride, along Narragansett Bay in Rhode Island. Although it ended up up the 40s, the wind from the water tempered that 40 degress somewhat.
The route shared some roads with The Flattest Century in the East, so it was cool to see those ways in the winter and without the hype and crowds of a big century ride.
Supposed to be in single digit temperatures here later this week.............

Well,
After grazing for two days...i'm heading out today for 20....Temps will get very ugly next week---Monday,a high of only 18, and that's without a windchill...happy cycling ;)
I rode all of 16.5 miles (roundtrip!) to my local REI to get my rear tyre replaced, as it was suffering from a cracking sidewall. I was planning to follow my muse, so to speak, on the ride home. It was just above freezing and raining the whole time I was out. My muse led me home to a shower and soup. :D
