Road Bike Racing - Personal Road Racing Goals for 2004

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

Well what are your personal goals for the 2004 year?

I have in mind to:
Do really well in the Schools Time Trials
Crack the hour for a 40km Time Trial
Complete the 196km K2 challenge (hilly terrain for the whole race)
Complete the Around Lake Taupo Century in a time well under 5hrs.

To do some of this I am:
Saving for a Cervelo Soloist 105 bike (aero frame)
Aerobars
Aero wheels

I'd like to win states and place at nationals. Definately high hopes, but before you can acheive the goals you have to aim for them.

Podium in a cat 3 crit.

2004 will by my first year road racing, I'll have to start out cat 5, like all others, but I feel i am cat 3 shape and form at this time. Lets see were it goes! :)

Good luck, Joe. You may feel that you're in cat 3 shape but you'll be blown away when you see how fast your first cat 5 race is.

Good thread!

My goals are to ride a 30km time trial in 55 minutes.
Place in the top half of the field in a sprint triathlon.
Complete an olympic distance triathlon.
Ride "Vättern Runt" (Around Vättern) - a 300km cycle race around Sweden's 2nd largest lake. I'm aiming for a time under 12 hours.

This will be my second season of racing and I think that my goals are achievable at least.

does finishing near the front of the local fast rides count as a goal for 2004?

I sure hope so, because this is one of mine. Which I already achieved on Saturday (pats self on back).

Next Saturday I'm going to do my first crit. I guess my goal is to finish respectably and maybe win a prime.

This summer I'd like to average 23mph in the bike leg of an Olympic distance tri.

Figure being able to ride 25-30 MPH in a pack (depending on the course) for 45 minutes to an hour or so, then be able to bop it up another 3-5 MPH to race to the finish. For a CAT V race. The last CAT V race I helped officiate, average speed was 29 MPH for 35 miles on a fairly flat course. The same day CAT III was same speed for 50 miles. With a sprint finish.

If you are not doing this yet, suggest riding with a team, and if you can, find one with practice races.

If you already know this, good luck. BTW...one of the employees in the shop where I work is CAT III. Trains 2 hours per day on the inside trainer, then lifts weights, then runs. Power Tap, HAC 4 Ciclosport computer. Knows all his levels and heartrate thresholds. And knows how much he needs to raise his lactate level to compete, regularly, for podiums at CAT III. He wants to get to CAT II.

Luck to you!!

I just joined a team! I am in the 50+ catagory. I have never raced, so I am looking forward to finishing a race (in one piece!!). If I survive that, I will see waht I can do to move up in the pack and maybe finish at the front of the pack. I haven't tested myself agains guys who have been racing for a while, so I have no idea what I can REALLY do.

Results will be posted later (but not on OLN)

I do not race save for two events:
They are both against Trek employees and I will win one, and come in about 20th in the other (the riders in one of the races are Cat racers).

I'm just getting back into riding so I would like to find a race/charity ride to do in Spring/Summer to see what I'm capable of. I try to ride 20 miles a day with 2 days off and am going to up that in about a month

Are you planning on doing road races or crits? I think the first NorCal RR is Patterson RR.

It sounds like a good goal to me...I have not made it yet, but keep on trying every year.

Good luck to you RiPHRaPH

My primary goal this summer is to beat all the roadies in the Avita Black Bear 100 mile point to point race. An average speed for the course will need to be in the 26 mph average to reach my sub 4 hour solo goal.

First off, joining a club :) Luckily there's a really good one a few minutes from my uni halls.

As for actually riding, I just want to get my average speed up to at least 20mph (currently at 13-14mph :o ), and maybe enter a TT or two, and possibly do a few track tasters. This season is going to be more preperation for next year than actual competition.

I am pretty new to cycling but I think I should be able to do 12.5 miles in 30 minutes after this year.

Steve

Right now I am doing the Early bird crits in Fremont. I slacked off on my training the last couple months so the crits have been tough ones. Last week was a horrible race for me and I was dropped like a sack of potatoes. I am not sure if I am really ready for the 48 mile Patterson RR yet. Still got a week and a half to decide.

1. Place podium early season in cat 5 race(s)
2. Upgrade by mid-season to cat 4
3. Hang on for dear life to my teammates in Feb-March training hell at least once a week - most are 1-3 category riders.

I figure I'm too old to risk crashing in a crit. I don't heal as quickly as I used to. I'll take risks with my own riding skills but don't want to crash as a result of someone else's mistake.

Here are my racing goals for 2004 (since I have never raced before, I'll keep it simple)
1. Enter a race in March.
2. Don't wreck...or if i do, recieve less than 50 stitches.
3. Don't finish last. Next to last is acceptable, last is not.

It sure looks like fun, and I'm getting where my middle-aged self can keep up with da kids.
Good Luck to everyone racing this year!

Getting through my first road racing season without getting blown off the back in every race. Dream of blasting off the front solo and winning a race with about 30 miles to go Eddy Merckx style :)
Cycling Britain south to north...John O'Groats to Lands Ends...875 miles in a week.
Going to Provence with my bike at the end of the year for a well earned rest.

I am the perverbial tourist..I do not think in terms of speed so much as distance..Want to cross two states...Nevada again and Michigan, west to east in the L.P. on a one day ride..Maybe couple other smaller rides..Joshua Tree National Park comes to mind.

I want to be the best...Not just to be the best I can be, but the best in whatever class I race in this year (starting at cat 5). I don't just want to be the best I will be the best...c'yall out there.

My goals are to top my total mileage from last year (I want to do more than 2500 miles) and to do 3 or 4 individual time trials (cat 5) and improve my time for each one.

What would be a "middle of the pack" time for a cat 5 20 km time trial?

I also think it would be cool to find a few riders to put together a team for team time trials just for fun. So I'm looking for a club as well.
