Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

At the risk of exposing my ignorance - what's "beta"?

It means information about the ride - clues, tips, descriptions. I believe the term originated with rock climbers in the early 90s. "Beta," from Betamax (early video medium), meaning a "verbal videotape" on the route to be climbed. When I lived in Boulder, Colorado, I heard it used on everything from climbing, mountain biking, to backpacking. I've been using it like that since with outdoor adventures.

This came up a couple of months ago. My search for lettuce fields rendered this thread: http://www.bikeforums.net/showthread.php?t=415970&highlight=fields+lettuce

I lived in Boulder in the late 70's but didn't do any climbing. Also, this would have been pre-VCR so the term wouldn't have existed.
Anyway, I think there is still space available on this tour. One of the organizers lives in SLO & seems to know the area pretty well (I don't). Others on this forum have offered their experience with route selection in the area. Sounds like the day we ride along Big Sur will be the longest & most climbing.

Thanks everyone. Haven't got 6 days for a ride then...
As for tours - wish we were doing "Ride the Rockies" which is currently running. Extra beautiful route this year.

There is a ride on July 6th starting in halfmoon bay:

Keep an eye on the "Regional Discussions/Northern CA" area for information on rides developing. Also there are posts on the tandem forum usually.
Hope to see you there :thumb:

Sorry I misunderstood the original request (got sidetracked with all the talk of video tape...not to date myself, but what's a Betamax?). If you're just looking for info on riding the California Coast, might I recommend this great book: http://www.amazon.com/Bicycling-Pacific-Coast-Complete-Canada/dp/0898869544/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1213911576&sr=8-1

Check out Wikipedia's entry on Betamax - nice summation. I recall that it had great quality and was more compact than VHS, and at that time we all thought it was going to be more popular than the bigger thang. But nope, it lost in the market. Glad we didn't jump commit to Betamax until the dust settled and VHS became the standard.
