I've been lurking on here for a few months, mostly for help deciding what kind of bike I want to get, but the post about being musicians brought me out from the shadows to post.
I don't have a bike yet, but I've taken the first step and went to a LBS around here to get some ideas, but I was just browsing and didn't take anything for a spin.

Just wanted to say "Hi!" and hopefully I'll be adding my experiences in the near future!

Welcome! Here in Des Moines we're blessed with many good bike shops and many miles of great bike trails. If only our winters weren't so god awful long. :-)

Welcome!

I should have posted in the musician thread too, to say I'm already a much better cyclist than guitar player.

Go to the local shop and ride 'em. I must confess I only rode one when I went. I ended up buying a bike a bit different than what I had in mind initially and I'm glad I did.

Welcome. I'm not too far from you here in Lincoln, NE. I here you on the winter length! Winter is long here in Nebraska too, but I'm going to take the step and still make an effort to commute on my bike during the cold times of winter, even in the snow! It will be rough but I'm gonna try it.

I don't have a mountain bike either for the southwest Iowa winters, but I am going to try biking as much of the winter as I can and hoping for the best. I am sure there will be heavy snow falls that will limit my riding to walking instead, but I can always hope for the best.

SCROVE - You have some great trails in your area, and I hope the flooding isn't messing that up for everyone in Des Moines. Our flooding hasn't been as bad as yours, but our farmers are hurting because of it. Good luck with your purchase and have fun riding.

I'm pulling for you and hoping as well that the winter is not so harsh this year.
