Remember all that diatribe from me about fixed gear bikes?...Well forgitaboutit!
I had a serious "Impulse Purchase" which really wasn't the best thing for a shoestring budget.
I guess I have to take back everythink I said now and eat Crow!
I agree I'm NUTS!

but I just couldn't resist...
....................................Taxi 777 is now riding a fixed gear

I swapped out the straight bars for bullhorns and higher quality breaks
It's a beauty!!

Looks good! How do you figure out the gearing you want, with your derailleur bike? will they put any gear you want on it when you buy it?

It comes with 42-16 with a flip-flop hub, turn it around and it goe's from fixed to freewheel.

I'll probably ride free wheel till I get used to the feel.

What do you fixie guys run anyway? Henry/Alan/Ramon etc...

These are the most powerful rim brakes I have tried... The black and yellow will match perfect. In that case, you should put them on your trek too ;)

42x16 on my commuter fixie - I suggest the freewheel configuration for the parade though.

43x16. It's good enough for getting up hills and getting down (without spinning too crazily).

I think I have 46x16 but there's not much by way of hills here.

42x16 is a good all around gear if you wanna be able to climb too. Going downhill ya are gonna learn to spin. Riding the fixie is not really about speed though. You will find that nothing is better into a headwind than a fixie. I run a 42x15, and often wish I had a 16 on some of the 10% grades.

I'll run 42x16 (69 g.i.) on mine during the winter and 43x15 (75 g.i.) in the summer.

Congrats on the New York purchase! I'm using the stock 42x16 as it seems to cover the bases well for my style of riding. The bull horns make extended climbing out of the saddle much easier on the back with the forward leverage. At some point I'll think more about upgrading the wheels as they are the weak point of the Langster. I've only used the fixed side, never swapped to the freewheel yet.

I run a 42 x 17 and find it to be a good compromise up and down Berkeley. When you first go fixed, watch out for the bike bucking you like a horse when you forget you can't coast -- you will learn fast. What I learned was how often I would coast for just a second, like when changing my position on the saddle. Also, if you are past your mid-thirties, be sure to actually use those brakes, not your legs, for most of your braking (but you will love the control by just using your legs in slow traffic and at lights).

Very cool, Pete! Those city-specific Langsters are fun, and that one is so you. :)

I run 47x16 (previously 52x16) on my fixed gear bike, which is fine for around here, but my legs were burning for a week after the Oddball ride.
