Training & Nutrition - Heat Exhaustion

Did a metric century about mid-May. About 40 miles into it I began to have leg cramps, and became totally exhausted before the ride ended. Don't think I sweat very much. I finished but was disoriented afterward. Got sunburned badly. I'm now pretty certain I had heat exhaustion or a mild heat stroke. It's been about a month and I still have no energy. It's all I can do to ride an hour. Has anyone else had tn=his and if so how long does it take it to recover?

No way it should take a month to recover. You might want to see a doctor.

I got heat exhaustion. Guess, I did not sufficiently hydrate. It was in the lo 90's. I am not very heat tolerant. It set in gradually. When I got home I did some minor bike repairs. Yes, I felt dizzy, but it gradually got worse. It set in while working in the warm garage. / soon it affected by breathing. / Here Samu Doctors come to one's home. He gave me a valium shot. It quieted my breathing down. I was like hyperventilating. / I took lots of water for about three days. Those three days , I felt really weak. After three days it went away. Meanwhile , I consumed lots of energy drinks . / I'd see a Doctor. My case was pretty bad. But, I was ok in after three days.

Tell your doctor. Doctor might order a blood test to see what's going on.

The only heat stroke I've had was while hiking in the Grand Canyon. I felt like I had a terrible hangover
for about 2 days, but I was back to my normal cycling level after a couple of weeks. You might should
see a Dr.

heat exhaustion doesn't take a month to recover from.

The thing that really sucks about heat stroke is once you get it, it's easier to get the second and third time, and so on.......

Yup. I learned a hard lesson playing rugby and now I have to be very careful. Hope the doc visit works out.

Heat stess/exhaustion and hyperthermia or heat/sun stroke are not the same thing.

While over 20% of heat stroke victims die regardless of health or age, children seem to be more susceptible to heat strain than adults. In some cases, the side effects of heat stroke are heat sensitivity and varying degrees of brain and kidney damage.
