2 Cyclists Critically Injured, Teen Accused Of DUI
EL DORADO HILLS (AP) ― Forty-eight-year-old Kathi Sturgeon is fighting for her life after she and a friend were mowed down hit by a driver while riding their bicycles Wednesday.
The CHP says Sturgeon and 43-year-old Kathy Hurd, were hit on El Dorado Hills Blvd by 19-year-old Brandi Thomas. And police suspect DUI.
"I think it's horrible," says Nancy Edwards, El Dorado Hills resident.
Investigators say that early Wednesday morning the two were riding their bikes -- training for an upcoming race -- when Thomas, who was allegedly drunk, drove her vehicle into the bike lane striking them both.
Sturgeon was airlifted to Sutter Roseville Hospital and Hurd was taken to the UC Davis Medical Center.
"One of my friends was at the park when the lady was airlifted out and it brought me to tears," says Nancy.
Sturgeon is a well-loved director of women's ministry at Lakeside Church in Folsom. Her church family has created a blog to update members on her progress and ask for prayers.
"Kathi is a fighter," says church member Bryan Hardwick.
The congregation says that because Sturgeon has impacted communities around the globe, many around the world are praying.
Thomas was arrested for DUI and released. CBS13 went to her house, but she didn't answer the door.
The church is not only praying for Sturgeon and Hurd, but the suspect as well.
"We have regrets. Prayers are with her as well," says a pastor.
Sturgeon is currently listed in critical condition at Sutter Roseville Medical Center with head trauma and internal injuries. Hurd suffered a broken collarbone, multiple spinal fractures and a concussion in the crash, according to CHP. She's listed in serious condition at UC Davis Medical Center in Sacramento.
