Working for a local fire/rescue department - and because many people are making their New Year's Resolutions - I wanted to take this opportunity to encourage everyone to CARRY ID on you when you ride!
There are many good options for doing this; among them:
1) http://www.roadid.com/
2) http://www.sol-id.com/who.html
3) http://www.bikehighway.com/preview_pmidt.htm
Please, do this for yourself, your family and to assist those who may someday come to your rescue. If you're still not convinced, this page features some great testimonials: http://www.roadid.com/testimonials.asp
I wish everyone on BikeForums a happy, safe and prosperous 2004... :)

I have my name & phone. # inside my helmet. just in case
Great advice!
I always carry ID with me on a ride. Very tempted by the ankle ID on the roadid website, though... what a fantastic idea!
I always carry ID- you never know what might happen to you on the road- and you might be too incapacitated to be able to help people identify you.

i carry my medical card whenever I bike- hope it doesn't mean I'm a fatalist- should include a contact card or...though. Geez, this is depressing, but a very valid post.
I always carry ID too for all the reasons previously mentioned. Additionally, I'd need it if I wanted to use any of my credit cards as all of them say "See ID" (in place of a signature) on the back.
I carry my old drivers license with my blood type and phone number written on the back; I also put the same info plus my drivers license number inside my helmet.
I carry my money clip, which always has my driver's license & insurance card in it. Also, to avoid any legal hassles, I carry a state ID card (not linked to driver's license) in my seat bag.
PetSmart and even WalMart have vending machines which will custom engrave ID tags that could serve well. Price is in the $3 - $6 range.
But if a cop stops you and asks for ID, be careful before you show your drivers licence.
In the UK, cyclists dont need to carry a DL, so we can use any other type of ID. If we show a DL, and get booked for some infraction, then we can get points of the DL. Get enough points and you loose it.
I carry my driver's license, phone numbers of neighbors & family on a sheet of paper and my medical card in a little plastic holder (you use for fishing licenses) and put it on a chain around my neck. Even if I am only taking my walks I carry it. It came in real handy when I crashed a month ago and needed someone to take me to the hospital. I had the people who helped pick me up off the ground call my neighbor to take me to emergency. If I hadn't had phone numbers I would have had to call an ambulance--didn't need that bill too.
I have ALWAYS carried ID when I ride...would not consider doing otherwise.
i always ride with my wallet, containing my provincial health insurance card and my birth certificate. there's also some next-of-kin contact information in there. a buddy of mine who's a doctor and worked in emergency said that they always always check the pockets of every unconscious patient who comes in, so if you have any special health information -- if you're on meds of some kind, have allergies, are diabetic or have some other condition, it's a good idea to carry a card with that information.
Usually I'll throw my wallet in one of my Jersey pockets or a fanny pack. On short training (loop) type rides, when I know I won't require my wallet, I slip my military ID card under one of the legs in my riding shorts, it fits well and with some sweat from riding it sticks to my leg and won't accidentally fall out.

Here in California, most places can use the computer in the car to match your name and address to your DL number.
I always carry the little "wallet" with me. It's like a big coin purse. Great for the jersey pocket. Has a window pocket on one side with an info card. I wrote "Cardiac Pacer" in big letters.
Next of kin contacts, now we are getting down. I always carry my ID..Just wondering, we do not need a drivers license to ride a bike; yet we can be ticketed! What if we do not carry our drivers license? Go speeding down hill, probably take you in....? In that case, always wondered if they would take my bike in the cruisers' trunk..
God forbid you get arrested in lycra..Wow....Would not want to be held in the arrest tank, like that. So I , .Suggest always have a pair of soccer shorts ready for a cover up! Of course if they are too tight, you can keep them glued to your body.
Sorry, I once worked in prisons as a contractor..Would not want to be there. SOmetime my imagination gets carried away.
Always. DL, insurance card, and a card with my medical condition and daily medications.
Not carrying ID is just plan ignorant.
I have my name tatooed on my body parts along with info to put me back together like "left foot", "right elbow"... I also carry my wallet with driver's license, health card, library card, etc. My repair kit includes a few quarters. Better safe than sorry.
Si por suppuesto. Yes of course I carry ID .Don't leave home without it! It is also interesting to see there is a good thing you can get at Wal mart. I do not hate Wal mart but must agree, most times it is a zoo and the other customers are rude, at least many of them.
I have my name, address, etc. in my halmet and ALWAYS ride with my Road ID (http://www.roadid.com) wrapped around my ankle. :)
I carry wallet with ID and insurance info, quarters and seven dollars in just case, bandaids, first aid creme, lip balm, rain poncho, tools, map, flashlight, and light jacket. All of these things have come in handy at one time or another.
I carry...seven dollars in just case...
Okay, you had to know this was coming. Why seven dollars? Why not five... or ten? ;)

To buy a couple packs of cigarettes when I ride! Just kidding. :D
Actually, this started about seven years ago when I ran out of cash to buy a soda, snack and enough gas for the drive home(yeah, sometimes the gas tank gets pretty low). If I ran out of gas I could get a gallon of gas and a gas can for seven dollars(if the place didn't take credit cards). Why not ten? It would bug me to leave a ten dollar bill forever in my tool kit not earning even a very small amount of interest. I'm cheap!
In my saddle bag I have business card that I've written my wife's and parents' phone numbers, my blood type and allergies.

LOL, okay then.
In all seriousness, I'm happy to see so many carry ID with them. It's an easily overlooked thing - until something happens...
Every time I ride i have my I.D., ATM & Medical Insurance card on me. I a EMT once how they identify the person if the victim is unconcious. He told me that someone searches every where they can for some kind of I.D. I then asked even if the person is on a bike and has some sort of bag. He said, yes but first they search the victim, then they look elsewhere.
Its good to know that if somenthong does happen where I can't respond I will be indentified and my wife contacted. Good to know Emt's, etc do this as part of their job.
I only carry ID when riding solo, I don't bother when in groups. I usually pack my Drivers Licence and a Credit card just in case I need to call a taxi, to get a lift home for mechanical breakdown that renders the bike unrideable, spokes etc. As far as medical insurance, down here the Ambulance will ALWAYS take you to a public emergency ward, they are better set up than the private hospitals, and are free. :D

I got one of those cheap 'dog tags' with my name, address, and phone number. Only cost about $5.00; much cheaper than a roadid.
I don't see a real need to carry an insurance card on a local ride. If I were in an accident and needed emergency care, it will be provided regardless of an insurance card. We can work out the billing details later. If I had any allergies or critical medications, I'd probably get a second dog tag with the info.
I believe that blood type is unneccessary to carry. I would hope that a hospital would disregard the information and would type my blood anyway to be safe.
The only time I carry a wallet is if I plan on doing some shopping.
i don't carry id... except that if my bike is not stolen, ppl will know it is me :) not another one quite like it... if they care to look at my legs.. that is if they are still in one piece.. they can track who i am down by my distinct scar on my lower left shin. hospital records and dental can identify me...
as there is no one to really notify... they can take their time before they start sucking up all my worldy goods..
geeeez i hope they bury my bikes with me.
