I heard a rumor about this death trap getting redone with a bike lane. Anyone have a date? I live in Inglechester and work at Venice Beach. The tight 5 lanes squeezed into the space of 4 bridge, the Culver Blvd. on/off ramps, and the Culver Blvd underpass are the gnarliest part of my commute. The rest of it is rather relaxing, but my god this section freaks me out, especially at night (no friggin streetlights).

Yeah, I try to avoid that myself. There are other ways to go. Where is your start / finish?

I start near Airport and Manchester, and finish at the Venice Breakwater. On my return route I have taken Fiji around Marina Del Rey, then Pacific Avenue across Ballona Creek, but it adds four miles (yes, I am a sissy) and there is a similarly hellacious patch on Manchester just west of Lincoln. Maybe Westchester Parkway-Pershing-Pacific Ave bridge-Marina Bike Path.

Maybe Westchester Parkway-Pershing-Pacific Ave bridge-Marina Bike Path.

Yes. That's how I do it.

The extra miles are good for you - and safer. ;)

You know those blinding flashing lights on police cars that look like a Christmas tree on steriods? You see them a mile off. Someone needs to make a small version of those for mounting on a helmet. You gotta be SEEN!

Well, did the long route. It was alright. At dusk, pedaling into the wind along the Marina was a bit of a pain, but otherwise it was a mellow ride. Only one car buzzed me and the light is much better. It is so bizarre that on an insanely busy stretch of road, like HWY 1 at its narrow point there are no street lamps, and then on a wide, empty stretch like Westchester Pkwy, there isn't a dark spot to be found. Must be Homeland Security money funding lighting near LAX.
