I just mangled the crown race of my new Ritchey Scuzzy Logic Pro headset by trying to install it without the correct tool. Is it possible to get a replacement crown race, or do I need to buy a new headset?

Thanks. Dave

P.S. I just ordered a Park crown race setting tool, so I will not make the same mistake twice.

Do you live near a well stocked LBS? They should have spares kicking around, possibly.

I'd just call Ritchey and explain the problem. They might even send you a replacement free just to keep a happy customer.

Make sure your fork crown is 26.4 mm and not 27.0 mm. If it's a japanese bike from the 80's it might have a 27.0 crown. I have a Centurion bike and had to get a 27.0 crown race to go with my ritchey logic headset. http://www.bikemannetwork.com/biking/p/COMPHSPRTCRWN/HD2049

Most bikeshops can mill a 27.0 mm (JIS) fork crown race seat down to 26.4 mm (ISO) to take the more common race size.

Hello DaHoss,
.
Can you tell me what '80s Centurion model you have? And
would all Centurion models of the '80s have the same crown
race size of 27.0?
.
I'm interested because I have six Centurions (five Japanese-
made) from the '80s and, who knows, I may need to change a
crown race some day.
.

I have a 1989 Dave Scott Ironman. I have no idea if all the Centurions have the J.I.S. sizing on the fork crown but I know for sure mine does. Like the OP, I beat the 26.4 race to death before I realized it wasn't going to fit.:D Here's my Centurion...............

Great link. I have a 1983 Elite 12 that has been modernized. Tange #1 tubing and the thing still rocks. Have to take issue with the pecking order that the LeMans is above the Elite.

Hi,
.
Nope, the Elite was one step above the LeMans in my '83
catalog. It's introduction reads:
.
"The light weight, components, and performance of a serious
racing machine, yet priced only slightly more than the
LeMans 12."
.
Not Tange #1, though. Tange #2 for the three main tubes and
"Tange Hi-Tension (fork) blades," according to the catalog.
Almost certainly Hi-Ten seat and chain stays too.
.
There are two Elites on eBay at the moment, a large 1980
model and a small 1986. A big difference in frame materials
and components. A comparison demonstrates how models at
every price point were upgraded at least to some degree
from year to year.
.
I posted pics and specs for yet another '86 Elite recently
sold on eBay the other day on the Centurion Serial Number
Database thread in the C&V forum here.
.

I realized I made a mistake on the tubing on my 1983 Elite 12. It is a small size and has Champion #2. Which I was told, lighter than Champion #1 on the larger models in the same line.
