Southeast - Flat learning route for newbie in Gwinnett, GA?

I am a newbie and live in NE Atlanta/Gwinnett County, in the Norcross/Lilburn area. My neighborhood is full of cars and hills and is a very scary place to try to learn to ride. Does anyone know of a place I can go to ride on a flat or very gently sloping (I tend to pick up too much speed and loose control, going downhill) route that is either a designated bike/skate path or a very low-traffic road? I really want to ride but right now I'm pretty limited to going around in circles in my cul-de-sac.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated!

But don't worry, you'll pick it up quicker then you think. You can go as fast or as slow as you want going downhill, as long as your brakes are working right.

Now the newest trail in Gwinnett is the Suwanee Greenway. Spend some time googling and more information than the link below will come up, including maps. This is planned to connect soon to another path over toward I 985. Right now it is a little under 5 miles.

I have had decent luck riding in areas of Roswell near the rowing practice facility. Also, larger office parks can be a chance to get some good road time during off-peak hours.

This is a great suggestion. This is part of my commute to work. If you link it up to Riverside Road, you can get about 5 mile of biking each way. Check it out.

There is an office park off of Peachtree Industrial, in Duluth which you can get a good loop going. Avoid during busy times, best done at night. It is called Wintergreen and is close to the driving range.

Also, if you can drive a bit, there is a great industrial park in Flowerey Branch. It is almost empty, no buildings yet, the roads are new and clear. There are small hilly sections, you can work on your descending. You can also loop through Old Oakwood on a few back roads. To get here, take 985 to the third exit, Spout Springs, turn left, first road on right is Thurman Tanner. That is the main road in the Industrial Park. You can do loops on it, there is a time trial done on it every August.

That would be River Green, not Wintergreen. And the Path from Atlanta to Stone Mountain.
