View Full Version : Quoting photos

I've been on these forums for a couple of weeks and one thing is ruining it for me. People 'reply with quote' and the photographs are recopied to another post. Some photographs appear four or five times. These forums are filled with copies of photographs. I'm sure that I'm not the only one who doesn't have high-speed internet connection in their budget. It sometimes takes 15 minutes to view a single page of posts with dialup. After waiting all that time, it's very frustrating to discover the same photographs appearing over and over again.
Can the moderators change the software switches to eliminate this problem?
It's funny that each photograph is limited in size, yet there is no limit to the number of times a photograph can be copied.
Until it is fixed, can I ask everyone to please be courteous and delete the image reference from your replies?
Thanks.

Holy crap, dial up? Is excite.com also your favorite search engine?

I don't live in the city, but I'd rather catheterize myself with a pedal tap than go back to dialup.
BF is a media-rich format. Get used to it or pay for bandwidth.

You can't access methods of internet connection other than dialup out in the country in some areas. They just put in a new subdivision near here, and the only option is dialup.
Also in some countries outside North America (especially out in the country) dialup in the main choice, only choice, or the least expensive choice by a huge $ amount. Let's keep in mind that BF is a global community.
In my case, I do have high speed, but photos bog down my computer. When a thread becomes very photo-intensive, I can't open it anymore. We are given the option of including thumbnails in our threads (see Manage Attachments). I'd like to see the option to include full-sized photos removed, and leave us the thumbnail option as the only option. Or a link to a site like Flickr.

Good points, although...
Sattelite internet is available anywhere.
If you have "high-speed internet" but photos bog it down...it's time for a new computer, probably has been for years.
The more people frustrated with lack of bandwidth that demand (and are willing to pay for) more, the sooner we'll all have more available.
Sorry, I don't believe in going backwards to accommodate old technologies that deserve to die. If you're on dialup, learn to deal. Don't make everyone else suffer.

My computer serves my needs adequately. I don't need to fork over a lot of cash for something new just to keep up with the Joneses.
And don't think of it as "suffering" ... think of it as simplifying. Living more simply is where it is at! :)
Sorry OP but you are in the minority. Either budget for faster internet or turn off images in your browser.

Zeimas mentioned what I've done at times on dial up, turn off images in the browser. I don't like wasting anything and quoted photos don't seem to have a lot of point. Efficiency has always been interesting to me, maybe the most interesting general topic in my life, but that's another blog post. I do have high speed "light" right now but mostly I don't need it. Tabbed browsing turned things around for me. I would be reading my first pages while any others I wanted were loading. I have an interrupted sleeping pattern which I enjoy and tying up the phone line at 3 am isn't as much of a problem as it is during the day.

Oh crap! coffee out my nose.....

He may be in the minority by being on dialup, but I'm not so sure that he's in the minority regarding the same photos being repeated over and over in a single thread. It bugs the snot out of me too. In most cases it serves no purpose, doesn't contribute to what is being said in any way, and does nothing but make the thread bigger volume wise.
I'll go one step further and say that I find it equally annoying when someone quotes an entire 6 paragraph message to simply add a "+1" or a very short response to one sentance out of the whole thing. We all got to see the message being responded to, why not just delete the crap that is irrelevent to the point you are trying to make or add to?
^^^^^
It's a message board on which all sorts of people post. The idea of having a standard way to post a reply is not just ridiculous, but also totally impractical. You'll just have to accept that others will do things differently than you. It's small potatoes; there are much more important things to get upset about.

I didn't say it was upsetting, I said it was annoying.
see how easy that is? :)

Whatever you wish to call it it sure seems to bother you.

I have DSL (advertised as "up to 1.5 MHz", but actually about 1 MHz) and subsequent views of the same image aren't transmitted (your browser gets them from its temporary file cache), so there's really no time penalty, but I still find the endless quoting extremely annoying...not just of the pictures, but of the text, too, when people quote the entire previous post. You can edit the quotes in your posts to eliminate the extraneous material and keep only enough to identify what you're talking about in your own post.
I find it ironic that nobody "quoted" the OP in their response. Was this due to the lack of photos?
A very easy way to solve the problem is to use FireFox (version 3 rocks !!) and the addon ImgLikeOpera (http://imglikeopera.mozdev.org/) which lets gives you control over images.
I feel your pain, I was trapped on dialup for years. I though I'd died and gone to heaven when we got a fractional T1 at work.
Not everyone lives in the city.
My "city" has a population of 148, and we have DSL. Do y'all Canadians need to borrow Al Gore for a spell?

-Quoting photos is for the most part unnecessary.
-That subdivision is doomed to lose a lot of sales.
-There are ways to block pictures in most browsers.
-I can think of many, many other things that bother me more.
-Editing posts works well to emphasize what is being replied to w/o excessive scrolling.
-If you refuse to keep up with the Joneses, that's your choice. Don't expect the Joneses to slow down for you.
I have DSL... and I get annoyed at scrolling past the same dozen photos time and time again. Not trimming quotes down to a reasonable amount is just laziness and rude. There are very few times when you actually NEED to "quote" the photos.... just just get rid of 'em!

I have DSL and I sometimes find it annoying, too. That said, there's no way we could include this behavior as something for the moderators to be dealing with constantly. I'd also be reluctant to put restrictions on pictures showing up in quotes. Sometimes it is important for the continuity of a thread to be able to quote a picture, and we would not want to make that impossible for members.
I think most people who do this are simply unaware of how annoying it is, or don't realize they can edit the some or all of the pictures out in a quote. Have any of you tried sending PMs to members who do this all the time and just (politely) explain what it's like for you to read a thread when they do that? A great many people do change their behaviors when they come to realize how they are negatively impacting other people. At the very least, you don't know they aren't willing to change unless you try to communicate with them about it. :)

I don't want to block the pictures. I want to see those pictures, just not over and over and over again.
Not everyone has the choice. Are you saying that if you can't afford to keep up with the Joneses, you are not welcome on these forums?
In the near future, many more of us will be forced to cut back as gas and food prices soar and the value of the dollar continues it's nosedive.
The repitition of photos is more a matter of just laziness.

I agree with the poster who asked why thumbnails are not the standard for all submitted photos.

Why don't you check out the living car free forum; I think you might like it there. It's rather utilitarian.

I am a regular viewer in the car free and the utility bike forums, but they are also filled with quoted photos.

Why don't you ask the folks there about not quoting photos?
I am not all exercised about quoted photos, but do find it more or less annoying to scroll through them, particularly when the quoted post has multiple photos. Quoting long text-only posts is just as annoying, to, for that matter. I recently wanted to quote someone, and the only relevant stuff was one paragraph, so I held the delete button for the appropriate amount of time, to prune what I was quoting to a manageable size. I saw it was being courteous, because I figured that if I find long quotes annoying, it might be true of others as well.

That's how this thread started. Soon after my original posting, a moderator yanked the thread and moved it here. I didn't know this part of bike forums existed. I'm sure that very few people saw this thread.

You can send the offenders a PM explaining your request.
