Southeast - Where not to ride in Jax, new to FL?
Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Not to put down Jacksonville FL, but I have just moved to the east coast from CA. I am still in shock in people's attitude against cyclists and other vehicles alike, people here care less for stop and yield signs.
Took the initiative to drive around Orange Park, Old Kings Rd, Blanning, Beach blvd, the areas seems a little trashy with sporadic nice neighborhoods here and there, lost count on trailers of all kinds, the melting pot is the craziest I have seen, similar to Richmond, CA.
Instead of asking places to ride, I will ask what areas should I stay away from?

What part of orange park were you in that you seen trailer parks? I used to live there and don't recollect seeing any. If you want nice then it's usually not best to ride in crowded cities and busy streets like blanding blvd. Granted, the outskirts of Jax aren't the nicest but I don't see a problem with you riding almost anywhere. Mandarin is nice. A1A blvd and Jax beach would be pleasant. Maybe the five points area and the back neighborhoods are old and nice to ride through. Of course there may be a few places you don't want to ride at night but me personally I don't see a problem riding almost anywhere. I may steer clear of the usual bad neighborhoods as you will find in any major city area.
Take a ride down A1A from Jax beach to St. Augustine. Go out to Ponte Vedra and play some golf! But I don't see Orange park as a great place to bike. it's a congested city area with lots of traffic and no real scenery. Come out to Gaineville if you want. It's very bike friendly and most roads have large bike lanes.
Hey, welcome to Jax, you were researching some of the most heavily car traffic roadways in the city. Where do you live is the first real question that needs to be answered cause all the places you named are no where near each other.
Try Velobrew http://www.velobrew.com/JaxHome.asp this will give a lot of good areas to ride, check the North Florida Bike Clubs map site: http://www.nfbc.us/Rides/Maps/tabid/109/Default.aspx to give you some good ideas. Also check Map My Ride as they have quite a few good rides mapped out.

orange park sucks for bike riding.. but fleming island has a decent bike path that runs down 17 if you're in that area. Out of orange park, riverside's pretty amazing (cool breezes, shady trees, fourway stop signs and parks along the way), also biking around jax beach side streets is sweet and a nice commute if you're down that ways.
Ok, I am 3 miles from Cecil Field Commerce, (Normandy Blvd, 134-103, Chassee Rd, I guess its Duval County.
I am clueless about this area, everything is flat and all flats just look the same. Today got hit with a very sporadic, but aggressive hailstorm, sudden 15 to 20 mph winds for a period of 30 minutes. This was insane, all afternoon it was nice and overcast, nothing much and then out of the blue lightning and thunder, hail, heavy rain, sudden drop in temperature. I had a small map to guide me back home and it was destroyed by the rain. Thanks to some red necks who humbly guided me back to Cecil Field area or else I would have been cycling in zig-zags all afternoon.
Welcome to Florida in the summer. Afternoon riding at your own risk. Either wait until the rain happens and ride after or ride in the morning.
Since you are over near Cecil, the Jax to Baldwin Rail Trail is over near you. Take 295 N to Commonwealth, turn left, go through the light and when you get to the Post Office complex, turn right on Imeson Rd and 1/2 mile N on the left is the trail head. 29 miles round trip. It's a nice trail. Lots of rides in the area use it as a starting point. Check with Lake Shore Bike on Blanding Blvd for some ride info on the Westside of town: (904) 388-0612

Welcome to Jacksonville, and welcome to Florida in the summer. Riding should br confined to the morning with frequent checks to the weather underground radar map. I am recently returning to Florida after 8 years in Oklahoma. Believe me I welcome the Florida weather.
A ride I do in your area is called the West Side Ride http://www.nfbc.us/LinkClick.aspx?fileticket=e0wvDJrwxNs%3d&tabid=109&mid=503 It starts at 9AM on Thursday morning from the Winn Dixie on Argyle Forest Blvd I guess it would be considered a "B" ride since it ranges from 15 to 18 mph. Maybe I will see you there as you can see from the map it goes in and around Cecil Field. Ask for Jim
