i have a 1990 cannondale sr 400 road bike. It is 7 in the back and 2 in the front
Have there ever been any 7 speed sti shifter/brake combos, or can i convert one??

I would rather not buy an eight speed cassette for lack of money and i am too busy building a haro escape 8.3 and i am in the process of overhauling and upgrading a gt agressor 1.0.

If any one has one to sell please contact me.

thanks

Garrett

Shimano Sora 7 or 8 speed brake/shifters. Aprox $140 US per set.

Any 8-speed STI levers, except Dura Ace, should work with your 7-speed rear.

From 1995 to 1998 Shimano made an RSX STI Shifter/ brake lever for 7-speed cassettes and freewheels, model #ST-A410. Here is a link that shows all the available Shimano models you're looking for:

Every once in a while one will turn up on Ebay, so I'd keep checking there. If you find some there, you definitely should try to get a set with the least miles on it as you can. They did break, and when they did, they weren't necessarily designed to be repaired, just replaced.

You're other option is to go with a Campy Ergo 8 shifter like a Mirage. If memory serves me correctly, Campy 8 shifter with a Shimano indexed rear derailleur will give you the correct spacing for your Shimano 7 rear cassette. To verify this, do a search for Campy/ Shimano STI compatibilty and you should find adequate info. Good luck!
