I'm thinking of buying a trainer, but don't have any alternate wheels to put on my bike. How essential is it to use my non racing wheels on the trainer rather than my racing wheels? I've got a fuji roubaix with ritchey zero wheels. So will the trainer really wreck my wheels and how so?

No. It will wreck tires if they are not perfectly centered. Sometimes cheap trainers will be slightly out of alignment and will chew through a set of soft expensive tires.

So that's it? Only the tires will be wrecked? I could have sworn that I read somewhere to use your 2nd tier wheels, can someone explain this?

Just the tires. It's convenient to have a second rear wheel with a cheapo tire that you can use on the trainer though.

k thanks, I guess a trainer would work for me then. But still open to dissenting opinions.

I got the conti hometrainer tire and quit worrying. It will last forever.

I'll probably wait till it starts getting colder to buy a trainer as I won't be using it this summer anyways. Thanks for all the advice guys, I'll try and get some of those training tires.

i have a second cheaper wheel/tire/cassatte setup that i use on the trainer. i couldnt see using an expensive tire, like a PR 2 or 3 on a trainer. of course it will shorten the life of the tire. later.
