It looks like a real short tripoded disk and clips onto your wheel hubs. Is it a spacer? Sorry for such a potentially dumb question and no picture...

It's a spoke protector. It's function is a back up in the event that you accidentally shift your chain into the spokes.
I don't have them on any of my bikes but I'm pretty picky about keeping everything properly adjusted.

that makes sense. Last time I messed around with a drivetrain was a looong time ago. It seemed totally useless.
I'd heard them derided before, but hadn't heard what they're actually for. I guess I'm glad to be a dork, since my wheel doesn't seem to have suffered from my having shifted beyond my largest cog. Funny what a nice drive-side tumble down the trail will do to your derailer adjustment...
