Was in toronto today and passed a place called Uncle Jacob's that had a number of bikes there that looked WAY out of place
- Aqua Bianchi road bike (probably large frame)
- shiny red fixed gear road bike, no brand on it, been repainted w/ Shimano brakes on it
- a number of assorted Diamondback hybrid bike styles
Just thought I'd pass word

There are for sure a number of disreputable shops around Toronto that are generally to be avoided if you want to buy a used bike in good conscience. Uncle Jacob's seems to be one. I don't know the name of it, but that ugly place on Queen W., just across from Trinity Bellwoods (a few doors west of Chippy's) is also a big no-no, apparently.

Apparently, Uncle Jacob has been working to clean up his act. He checks serial numbers with the police, gets ID, hangs on to bikes until they clear, that kind of thing. I'm not sure how effective it is, and I still hear bad rumours, but he's trying, I guess. A number of his good finds actually come from being a quick draw on Craigslist. To be honest, I still don't feel much confidence talking to the guy, but that's just me.
The other place on Queen W, by the way, is Igor's. Don't even bother with him, unless you enjoy being tackled when your new bike's previous owner spots you on the street.

I shudder whenever I bike by that place.

Yea, any bike store with hookers hanging out at a nearby corner should be avoided, especially late at night.
That is, unless your really, really randy and need a new bike. :)

PRO: Lookin' for a ride, sweetheart?
ME: Yeah, but I'm holding out for an IRO.
PRO: Check across the street honey.
Ha.
