I have a Bacchetta Strada (high-racer) bike. The tires I now have are Continental Gatorskins 650c x 23. I plan to do a credit card tour (no camping) with this bike and wonder if those tires can handle the extra weight of the racks and my gear for very long distances. Based on my research, it seems the tires are tough enough--but I am concerned that they may be too thin (not wide enough).

Has anyone toured on a bent with strong tires (like the Gatorskins) but that are also relatively thin?

How well did they serve you on your tour? Specifically, did they handle the load without blowouts or too many flats? And importantly, did the thin tires reduce your control in any way due to the increased load?

Tagging along for a response. I have a Corsa on order and will be replacing the stock tires with Gatorskins after delivery.

Thinner-carcass tires will roll easier, but are more prone to flats.

I've not heard that the weight loading of a tire had much to do with the matter. Never heard of a bicycle tire failing just from weight on it. Considering the fact that there's probably clyde-people with tandem bikes using those tires, it's a safe bet they can handle at least twice whatever you're going to be putting on them.

25 might be a better option if available in 650. Loaded is kind of nonspecific,
there are 135# cyclists and 235#. Panniers with 15# versus 30#. Length of
trip has a bearing also. If planning more than 500-800mi I would pack at least
one extra tire for those random tire killers that are more likely all loaded up.
We did fine on a tandem with 25mm Gatorskins in 700c and weighing upwards
of 400# both riders plus bike. Non-race 650c tires might be a bit scarce in
some places.
