Training & Nutrition - I'm calling you out!

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Those that need to lose weight that is. I propose a friendly weight loss competetion.
The contest will be by percentage of weight lost not total pounds. This keeps it more fair for everyone as not everyone has the same aount of total pounds to lose.
It will start at midnight Tuesday Jan. 6th, 2004 and end midnight June 6th, 2004, central standard time. We will all need to post our current weight by midnight Jan. 6th. Then we should post our weight say every 2 weeks.
We will need a neutral person to figure up & post the percentages for us. Anyone willing to do that.
The award will simply be bragging rights.
You can lose weight by any means at your disposal. But it is recommended that you do it is a safe & proper manner.
Any other suggestions or questions to help this contest succeed please post them now.
So what does everyone say about this? Anyone interested?
Hi,
Jan 10 there is going to be a weigh-in for a weight loss contest at Discovery stores. Such things don't float my boat; but you get free months of gym time if you sign up. There may be a gotcha in the fine print, but I plan on checking it out.

Hi, Yes I am most deffinately interested. I will post my exact weight tomorrow :D The only problem I see is weight training. People may be trying to build muscle and slim down but you will not be able to tell only by a number....just something to think about.
I hope more people will join the fun....

Inches lost around the waist might be a better any of us combine wieght training with weight loss. Sometimes your weight actually goes up as you build muscle and lose weight.
Or, even better, body fat percentage would be a good measure.

I agree this would be the best way to do the competition. Often they will do this for you at the recreation centres or community fitness centres. However for ease I guess I would like to get in on the weight loss competition even though I started a week ago and have lost 4 pounds. The first ten seem to fall right off and then it slows down considerabely. Right now I'm 256 and would like to get to 225 by July 1st.

Okay - my goal is 195 by May 1st, as I want to ride the Santa Fe Century in May and really be in good shape.
I am about 218 right now, was 245 last June.
I am pretty muscular, so I don't believe that the muscle gain will be a problem, as I have always weight lifted regularly.
I will join you in the challenge. Every 2 weeks?

I'm in.
Probably the easiest for most people to post is weight and waist size.
Weighed 242 last August, at about 227 now. Hope to be around 190 by June.
Friendly competition = good motivation for me!

Count me in. Currently weighing 213 fully clothed. That is the first time I've weighed since mid-November. Picked up 13 pounds over the holidays. Drat. I didn't mean to do that. My goal is 180 by June 1. If I can make 175 I get a new pair of wheels from the wife!
Is this going to be our official posting site?
Let the trash talk begin!
Gonna find out who's the biggest loser on the forum!
5'8"
186 lbs
28.3 BMI
24% Body Fat (Tanita)
Goal is 160 lbs (14%)
Before this is over, I'll need to put rocks in my pockets to keep the wind from blowing me away.
I'm up for this one. I'm just a pound or two below clydesdale weight now, raced clydesdale last year and wanted to move to sport this year. Lately I've been struggling to decide if I want to stay this weight and stay with the clydesdales (where I'm competitive) or go ahead and lose weight and move to sport class (where I'll HAVE to drops lb's to be competitive).Maybe something like this will motivate me to go ahead and go for it. Count me in. Good idea.
Suggestion: do it for weight only, keep it simple. I'm in either way...

for those of you who want to join this contest have until 12:00 am tuesday jan 6th, 2004.

Okay - weighed tonight at the gym.
217, which was really pleasing as I weighed 215 in September, and have gained only two pounds through all of the Christmas stuff, dark nights, cold, cold days, etc. Also, I feel I have put on at least a pound of muscle from weightlifting over that time.
So, starting at 217, I will let you know in two weeks.
Hey, anyone out there game to place our weights in a spreadsheet and post on a web page? I have a web page where we could place it and automatically have our percentage drop figured by the ss, but don't have the time to enter the weights in the sheet.

Wow, only 2 pounds?, I added about 5-6 lb's through the holidays, what's the secret?
I think it would be a great idea to put results on a web page...

DmvrFox - I can forward an Excel spreadsheet set up properly to figure % lost/gained, etc. But, can you post so will remain interactive on the website. And what would keep others from going into each of our listing and screwing around with the figures, etc. Can you password protect each persons entry so only they can post? Let me know. PM if you wish to discuss.
DnvrFox
01-08-04, 05:47 AM
No, can't post so it is interactive. Don't have that capability, and don't have time to learn!
One person would have to take the responsibility of updating every 2 weeks, then I could repost. Mainly, we can see how everyone is doing at a glance.
Not really a big job as there are only a few of us.

If you'll have me, I'm in. Have my own goals, but this should keep me honest. I might also be able to put a web page together to allow people to enter their weights in a couple weeks if there is still an interest.

Whoa! I missed this thread. I'd like to join in. Is it too late? I'm always late! Anyways, not a New Year's Resolution, but just a continuance of my weight loss with a Christmas Holiday set-back. I started at 282 lbs in Sept. got down to 258 lb by mid Nov. Through Thanksgiving and Christmas, was back up to 267. So on Jan 5th. I was 267, naked!
Already down to 262 just by drinking water in lieu of sodas!
Goal is to be back to 225-230 range by mid summer (B-Day is 7-21-69) and I want to be under 225 by then.

Eating less, and bike commuting, weekend rides, or riding the trainer every day, is the "secret" formula...

I want to join. I want to join. Been slowly losing weight over 2 years. Was down to 170 in the summer, usually around 175. Am now 187. Would like to be 155-160 by this summer. Tried Atkins and South Beach, but as soon as you tell me I can't have it - I start a marathan pigout. Cutting back on junk and eating healthy works for me. Stopping one bad behavior at a time.

I have set up a page where we can post our own weights if we desire to have others see our progress.
If you are interested, let me know your email and I will "subscribe" you. Once you are subscribed, all you need to do is save it as a favorite. Each two weeks you can post your loss (i.e., -4) or gain (i.e., +4).
Personally, I am motovated by seeing other's losses.
Let me know by PM or email me at

This is through "Yahoo Groups"

Okay, we have three people requesting to be entered in the chart.
I will enter everyone later on this week.
You will receive an email indicating you are enrolled in "Senior Fitness" - don't be scared, I no longer use this forum actively. The email will contain instructions about how you can post your own weights.
Let me know of your interest

Okay, I added some folks to the databse page, but it seems you DO need a Yahoo ID, which, if you enter your current one, or if you sign up for one, then takes you right to the web page where you can post your weights.
http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/SeniorFitness/database
You can cookie yourself in automatically, if you care to.
Dnvr - I tried and it would not let me in, is there anything else I need to know?

I need to enter your email as a member, and you need to have (or get) a Yahoo subscriber ID and password, if you don't have one.
Give me your email adress to
DnvrFox@aol.com
Attemnpt to click on the website and you should get an intercept by Yahoo asking for your Yahoo ID and password. If you don't have one you need to register and remember that ID.
Then it ?should?? ass you through to the link you clicked on.
Agai, I find Yahoo to be complicated and confusing, but it was the only option I could think of.
I just checked the table, and three people have entered their starting weights already, so it MUST be working!

Okay, we now have 5 folks posting to the database chart -

Plus one other member who has registered but has not posted yet.
Also, Clint Thayer has kindly set up a way we could become a "team" on the ActiveBody database. I can't see how this works because a "Team" leader would have to set up a team and choose the weight option.
I am pretty sure that Clint's does not allow for you to track your weight - i.e., see week to week changes, but is designed to see the current weight. However, I am not sure of that.
<edit> - I did set up a "dummy" team on activebody.org, and it appers to allow showing weights at current, three months and six months. You must use the "Body" tab.
The group is "BF Weight Loss" and the password is "fat".
Also, Outashape was able to join the Yahoo database list without my adding her, so that must be a possibility.
The problem with Yahoo is that once the moderator has joined, they can no longer experience the steps that others need to go through to join, and since I set this group up 4 years ago, I don't remember!
I have updated the headings in the database with a date for the entry of each two weeks. The database as set up now takes us through May 11, and at that time we can add a new identical table to take us through June or whatever.
I am very pleased that we have five folks posting - adds just a bit of competition for me and we can track visually our progress (or lack thereof) - and if anyone else would like to post in this manner please let me know
DnvrFox@aol.com
In any event, have a great day!

Hi Denver.
Members of your team can add there weight by going to the "Body" section on the left.
As a member just log into Activebody and click on the Body section and you have 2 ways of entering your weight:
At the top of the left menu option there is a link "Add a Body Measurement", click that and enter your weight (feel free to add other items as well, but not needed).
or
At the top of the Body section page is a "quick" add for your weight. Just type in your weight and click the submit button.
I'd be happy to answer any question people might have, and thanks for using Activebody.org,
Clint

Hey Denver,
I joined the team as well and noticed you didn't select the option that I worked on this weekend. If you go into the teams page and edit your team (link is at the bottom in the list of joined teams) to show individual members weights you will have a list of members and there current weight, first weight, the diff, and there goal weight.
Since you are the team leader, only you can change this option so let me know if you need any help.
To the others that want to join in... I invite you to join in, the site is free and easy to use and I'm always around if you have questions/suggestions/problems
Thanks,

Okay - it has been changed.
Now, we have TWO different charts. Which to choose?
I guess it doesn't make a lot of difference.
Yours also keeps track of mileage, etc., while the one I developed shows the progress over weeks.
Guess I will post to both!
Oh the decisons of life :D
Thanks for getting the Activebody weight thing together!
I say we use the yahoo thing for this contest, but I will use both. The activebody thing is great. I've been using a spreadsheet for my own log but this is even better than my spreadsheet. The only thing I did not like about it is that the averages are a bit skewed, since it lumps averages of both road and mountain biking in the same calculations. I have a few mtn rides where I feel lucky if I average 5 mph. Other than that it's great.
A question though, I found the bikeforums team, but it is password protected?
