6 Gladiators, 2 Cheetahs, 2 Roaring Mice, 2 Taxi’s 1 Deer!

An absolutely amazing “Epic” adventure in NorCal fashion. Lot’s of amazing experiences and a very long day with the best of friends. As soon as I get some of these picts edited I’ll tell you all about the grand adventure and one of the best days of my life.
Hang on!
Pete

I came very close to riding my fixie today, but I rode myself into oblivion on Saturday at the ALC reunion ride. (later on that report). My discretion was the better part of valor in retrospect. I rode myself out of oblivion back to exhaustion and exhilaration!

Marco and Ruth were running a little late and decided to park in my driveway. They immediately started working like a well oiled Indy 500 pit crew to put their immaculate Santana tandem together.

Launch…I did my ski jump down California street. M & R missed 1 light, but we made quick time to the Ferry building.

I was really happy about the turnout…Ecstatic! Actually. So great to see your faces guys.

We tore out of SF in a blur. Little bit stop and go along Chrissy field. Marco at one point just before crossing the bridge got a little antsy with some of the tourist and didn’t realize that Ruth had gotten off the bike! He proceeded to leave without Ruth! I see a marital spat over that one…later…

We blasted through Sausalito and so began the Deer problems. I barreled down the north side of Corte Madera grade. As I came around one corner, two cars were stopped. I hit my breaks narrowly missing the rear-end of one car while going to the right and almost off the road. I screamed multiple expletives and heard someone yell deer! Apparently the first car had hit a deer. Not sure how it all turned out though.

We we’re heading down Magnolia and some “Roid Head” without a helmet and ear buds in tried to pass Marco on the right and then a car on the right after the guy had already put his signals on!
He went ballistic on the driver then proceeded to foul mouth me cause I got ahead of him. I chased him down to offer some...”Irish Therapy”. Just as I caught him he jumped off his bike and ran into a store!...I must be scary looking or something…Oh well : (

Dave and Lisa decided to go a different way then the group so Dan chased them down and reeled them in. At the same time Ron and I played “Dueling Cameras” and started chasing each other singing the theme for “Dueling Banjos” while impedeing M&R from being able to turnaround. Really funny moment and Ron and I were cracking each other up like a couple of 2 year olds. We got into the Fairfax Roasters Coffee place and got some grub. We talked and laughed. I could have stayed there all day. Al Frankins son was working there and he came out for a smoke break and we started trading comedy bits…The guy was good but I think a got a few more insults in then he did. Nice guy though. Great sense of humor.

We climbed towards Alpine, and I pace with M&R. I split a little at the top so I could get ahead to take some descent picts of everyone. At the dam we met Lynn and Bob-(x-Taxi driver). They we’re a nice couple and helped us in our photo shoot.

Then a couple of really cute Roaring Mouse Cycle chicks showed up and I totally lost track of what I was doing and turned full attention on the two beauty’s.

Daniella, and Kate had raced yesterday in 107 degree heat (Napa) and they were out here training on Tam the next day! I took their picts till they got sick of the model shoot and started heading out. Ron had told us all we suck and took off to beat us to the top.
I chased after Danielle and Kate passed me! Game on!! We had just started heading up the backside of Tam when I heard cracking trees. I automatically headed away from the noise…Then suddenly a young deer fell from a cliff head first and just creamed himself! WE WERE STUNNED! I mean really…W T F! He had to have killed himself or her. I went over and I really thought the poor thing was dying. It couldn’t breath, so I move its head forward cause it’s head was tilted back as if it’s neck was broken. I started to pat it and talked to it calmly as it passed away and its breathing slowed. I’ve been with animals as they left the world and this one was going. The life was fading from it’s eyes. Very sad.
2 mins had passed then a slight twitch…Slowly it raised it’s head and looked at us all! With the speed of lightening it staggered to its feet and shot across the street over a guardrail smacking it hoofs on the steel and disappearing into the woods to be with its Mommy!

We just looked at each other. What the hell just happened?? Scary and cool all at the same time. I feel like all out caring and human goodness like the way Peter Pan and his cohorts brought Tinkerbell back to life! Kind of a beautiful moment that we all got to share together. Nice!

Back to riding Daniella took off like a beautiful antelope! Perhaps she was inspired by the spirit of the deer. (Daniella’s totem is now the Deer). I chased this deer till my lungs were bursting. I hung on as the crowd behind us faded. We began to realize we weren’t going to drop each other with out some intense HURT! As we began to settle into our rhythm we enjoyed some nice conversation. I really enjoyed our talk and we traded climbing tips and short stories.
Daniella just nipped me at the top before we stopped to wait for the others.

We had more conversation and headed off along ridgecrest. A couple of stops. Down the front we fought traffic and chased down errant drivers to berate their insidious behavior.

At Mike’s bikes I got on one knee and with a respectful recitation I explained to Ruth and then Lisa, that they had attained the status of “Cheetahs”. They had ridden with passion and courage along side “The Gladiators”. Maybe this seems somewhat silly, but it is not. In the days of old, woman were given much earned respect for their courageous deeds and bravery. Maybe it’s the Scotch/Irish in me but I still honor the ways of our ancestors. Now that our NorCal group has entered into the next level “Family” this all becomes important. Congrats Ruth & Lisa on your new honor we as Gladiators have bestowed upon you.! : ) All the woman of NorCal will eventuate to this level I am sure…

M&R and I vanquished an opponent heading up the corkscrew. M&R had pulled for me and then sent me out to destroy, which I did with honor. Afterwards M&R rode over the little that was left with so much glee. Alan and Dan, then Ron laughed heartily across the Bridge and spit back into the wind, sending Mother Nature into utter dumfoundedness!!

I think I better move this along, I’m so tired I going into some weird fantasy realm…
So we eventually got back to my place. My perfect Inn Keeper of a wife passed the ale and biscuits as we drunk and laugh heartily at our trials and tribulations of the day. I love my tribe and I would lay down my life for them. We are the beginning of a new emergence of spirit networking. A hybrid composite of the virtual/digital and human/matter society. I love the new world we are creating and once again I say “I’m looking forward to looking back at these days”

Wow they gave me some good medicine up there at SF General…
Nite Nite…I had a real blast with all you guys and gals today. I’ll never forget it. Let’s do it again soon

As always, great description Pete. However, there are a few things left out.

I took Caltrain over, and Alan (SesameCrunch) came aboard (somewhere near Hillsdale). We then rode over from Caltrain over to the Ferry Building, where we met Dave (sweetnsourbkr) and Lisa, followed by Dan (DG Going Uphill). But wait ... no Marco (uspspro). It turns out they ran a little late, and was not on Caltrain (although I don't think they would let the tandem on the train).

Speaking of, Caltrain changed the car arrangement, and the bike car is no longer just a flat space, where you can put your bikes. It is now changed with 4 racks on each bike car, and each rack can hold 4 bikes. There are regular passenger seats (in the middle of the car) on the same floor where the bikes are, and next level above are regular passenger seats. They may think it's nice, but I like the old arrangement better. It's too hard to describe, and you just have to ride it to see for yourself.

Ok, enough of the Caltrain rant! So we are patiently waiting, and Pete (Taxi777) says they will be down. So we wait, and we wait, and we wait. It was getting cold, so I had to put on my arm warmers, knee warmers, and jacket. I had enough time to put them on, as they still didn't show up.

So they finally arrive, and off we go. Well, the pace was blistering right from the start. I was maxing out my heart rate, and we weren't even 10 miles into the ride! We stopped at Mike's Bikes in Sausalito for bathroom break, and refill of supplies. First break.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w112/spingineer/Mt%20Tam%20Alpine%20Dam/2de96b3d.jpg

Once we get to San Anselmo, Pete takes us on his wild detours. However, we are missing Dave and Lisa. Dan mentions this and he was able to reel them in.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w112/spingineer/Mt%20Tam%20Alpine%20Dam/338dabcf.jpg

Before charging up the hill, we all decided to stop by the coffee shop (I think it's called Roasters, but not sure). 2nd stop ... it turns out this was more of the lunch stop.

http://i174.photobucket.com/albums/w112/spingineer/Mt%20Tam%20Alpine%20Dam/3ae07d22.jpg

We then head over to a park for a bathroom break ... this is the 3rd stop. Now why we didn't use the restroom at the coffee shop ... I have no idea!

Now the climbing starts on Bolinas. Everyone passes me up (except for Dave and Lisa). I manage to barely be ahead of them on the climbs. This time, since I did Bolinas once before, I know what is ahead of me. The climb wasn't as painful this time, perhaps because I knew what to expect now. Or is it that I am climbing better? Who knows.

After a brief break at the dam, we continue on. We pick up two Roaring Mouse club racers, and the gladiators ride with them up the hill. I remain well behind, as I know I wouldn't be able to keep up.
I'm climbing better, but there is no way I'm able to keep up with them. Maybe the whole week of riding the folder is building strength in me, but you couldn't tell by seeing how far back I am in the climbs.

Climbing up Mt. Tam, I felt good. I was shocked, and surprised, that I was right behind Marco and Ruth. They were probably getting tired, and I was getting my second wind. Whatever it was, it felt great.

By the time we got down the hill, and ready to go back across the GG bridge, I think I left all my energy on Mt. Tam. The winds were really fierce, with combination of headwinds and cross winds. It was so strong, I had to dial it back, and everyone was waiting for me on the other side of the bridge. I think I was just low on energy, and I didn't know it until we got to Pete's house, and had coffee and cookies. mmm ... coffee felt so good!

It was a great day, and great company too. Thanks Marco for leading this, and thanks Pete and Kathy for the hospitality.

One of these days, when Kathy is prepared to make us something at the end of the ride, we need to make sure we get back to Pete's before 5 pm. Just a thought ...

Great looking pics and report guys. I'm glad somebody mentioned the wind on the GGB. I went across it on Sunday as well and took a good gust and was dumped into the north tower (that thing is pretty solid). Most of you are veterans of multiple GGB crossings, I just need to learn how to ride in that kind of funky swirling crosswind.

T'was a great ride, as always.

Ruth and I were flying up the earlier climbs. The shaded one after Alpine Dam, we killed ourselves on that one trying to keep contact with the Roaring Mouse chick. Kept her within about 1-2 switchbacks.

So we were paying for it on the seven sisters big time. I was glad to hit the wicked descent. But got stuck behind a line of cars :(

Then the car behind me started honking, and cussing out the window. All the while I am practically tailgating the car in front of me. In front of which there was a LINE of several cars. I pointed to this line, but they seemed to be retarded or something  They continued their shenanigans until the end of the hill when they passed us, and immediately turned in front of us into a gas station. WTF:rolleyes: Since I happened to be turning right, I cut through the gas station and gave them an earful :innocent:

That "Roid Head" earlier in the ride was a friggen idiot too. He passes us (Ruth and I) taking off from a light and says "On your Riiiight" in the most sarcastic (get the F' outa my way) tone I have ever heard from a cyclist. As most people know, tandems take a sec to take off from a light, then I was immediately on his wheel (and he was slow, but thought he was fast I guess). At the next light we passed him which really seemed to piss him off, and he couldn't keep up. So as we (in front) were cutting over to the left turn lane to take the left fork around Larkspur. He was merging over into the same lane, and Said "hey hey hey! get out my way!" In the rudest possible tone. Of course I said "Are you F'ing kidding me?" So our group is moving together once again, and the D-bag does it again he passes us on our right with this pissed off look on his face, made some rude comment. Pete goes "Is this guy serrious? WTF." We all looked at each other laughing. Then a car in front of all of us puts his right signal on, and the Roid Head goes to pass the car on the right and almost got nailed. He went ballistic on the driver, telling him to use his signal. So as we flew by ON THE LEFT of the car. I yelled out "Pass on the left retard" :D After that the we slowed so Dave/Lisa could catch up, and the guy does it again. He passes Pete and I and says "On your riiiiiight" quite smugly/rude. Then Pete got pissed and chased him down.

Those were the only idiots encountered for the most part, thankfully.

The rest of the ride was great. It was warm, good friends, good fun. Thanks again Pete & Cathy for the hospitality at the end of the ride. Great apartment too!

Great pics and photos ! Sounds like a fun ride.

I was considering joining the ride, but honestly I didn't want to hold the group back (I need to ride more often, more hills).

Anyway, I went to Mt. Tam Saturday afternoon (not on the bike) with my fiancée, to enjoy the views and capture some photos.

Dang you guys were all flyin Sunday! :thumb: Sorry we couldn't keep up with you. We felt good the day before and used it all up then. Seems like we also missed all the excitement with 'roid guy and the deer (although we did have a deer cross the street in front of us on Camino Alto). When Dan mentioned " 'roid guy " I thought he meant Marco. :p

In any case, even though I didn't have a good day, I'm glad everyone else enjoyed their time, including Lisa, of course.

BTW, what do you think she was doing?????

It was a great ride. Thanks guys!

I was closest to the deer incident. It actually sounded at first like a boulder falling from the 30 ft. cliff to the right, and I thought I was a gonner, since we were going up hill and I couldn't really speed up much. Then, I see the one of the strangest things I've ever seen, a deer free falling! It landed about ten feet in front of me and a couple feet to the left, right on its back. Seeing how it fell, and how far, I was amazed that it was able to get up and run away. It did have a little limp, so I hope nothing was broken.

I've never seen a tandem team climb as fast as Marco and Ruth -- they are amazing!

Ty. S. I too have been blown into the pillar on the way back, but I though yesterday was actually mild for GG wind. Maybe I am just getting better at it.

Can't wait until the next ride!
