I used search but didn't see any threads for this year's HH100. There is now a glimmer of hope that I might be able to make it so I thought I'd go ahead and start a thread to see what other BFers are planning to attend.
Who's in?
Cuda...can you make this sticky??? Even if you're going to foresake the HH100 for CPC or Bonham? ;)

I'll be there. We booked a hotel last year on our way home from the 2007 HH100 lol. That's how much we enjoyed it. I did the 50 mile last year so I'm going to shoot for the 100K this year.
Stuck thread.
And, I'm attending. My wife and I are planning to do the 100k, staying the same place
I've stayed (camp chapparel) for the last 5 times I've been up there.

Hey Lotek...Thanks! I guess I missed the part where you became the mod for TX. Now I know!
I called to the Chamber to check on Host Homes (which I did 2 years ago) but they said they wouldn't have home info until July, so I'll check back then. I'm also looking RV rentals from Austin, as long as I can get 4-5 others to share expenses.
Were y'all able to pull off any sort of get together last year?

Probably not gonna make it again this year... too far, no money, no accomodations setup... the lack of being in shape is definitely only temporary.

Definitely in. I have a site at Lake Arrowhead State Park reserved, although I may follow up on an indoor option that I have available for the sake of A/C. Should be good times.

Hah! Me and the search function just don't get along! That second one could certainly have done fine as a sticky. Oh well...we've got one in place now!
I know what you mean regarding distance, money, accomodations and fitness. All of these are factors I'm considering. We did it on the cheap two years ago, but gas alone will make this pricey! As far as fitness, I think I've got a total of about 200 miles in the saddle so far, with 30 miles this past weekend being the longest so far. I've got to look at the calendar and figure out what I need to do between now and then to get in more rides with more distance.

I will be there, coming in from Houston. I am also dragging my brother for his first time to ride it too! I am doing my best to whip him into shape before we get there.
No accommodations yet, hopefully I will find a guest home; I have a couple of leads.
I can not tell someone that I went there and didn't do the full 100 mile ride.

Yeah... when the name of the ride has hundred in it... you better do a hundred :D
BTW, I didn't search to find those threads, I remembered them, and looked back a couple pages. Built in search function doesn't work too well on this site sometimes.
Hey Lotek...Thanks! I guess I missed the part where you became the mod for TX. Now I know!
Nope, not the Texas Mod but can occasionally work up enough mad skillz to stick a thread.
Seriously though, if you need a place check out Camp Chapparel ( www.campchaparral.org ) it's in
Iowa park (about 8 miles from the MEC), they have dorm type rooms, include spaghetti dinner the night
before and a full breakfast the day of the ride.
and the best part? checkout is AFTER the ride so one can shower before driving home.
oh yah, no 2 night minimum stay. you can book for Friday night only.
but if you go to Chapparel, bring mosquito repellent I think this place has the highest
mosquito population in all of Texas.

Coming again also this year after last year's inaugural effort on my part. My co-worker riding friend is coming along too. We have room at the hotel we used last year booked near downtown, so we are set. I'm looking forward to the ride! I've already got 2 centuries in this year and I'm down about 15 pounds! Should be a great ride, I can't wait for the fresh baked cookies at Electra!

I'll be doing the 100 mile ride again, and my wife is doing the 50.
Missing half a lung and a bunch of riding time, I'll likely be slower than last year's 5:35, but it will be a great chance to compare and see how far back I've gotten.

any idea on cost? we have a small group of people coming from denton and I'm just looking around for some cheap places to stay and this sounds like a match so far. also since its a camp, are you able to ride to the start or does it have dirt roads or something. Thanks for the help!

I'll be there....but man I hope the wind up there is better than it's been around here....if not, the finish will be a *****!!....but no matter, I will be there again and I plan on doing the 100miles....looking forward to the vendor show the night before and the spaghetti dinner!!

I'm coming in from Los Angeles to ride this and visit my Aunt & Uncle I haven't seen in a few years. I'm planning on riding the century though we'll see how much the heat gets too me. I'll be training in our hot spots out here starting Sunday to get ready for the furnace.
Any advice on the route? I saw the profile, it looks pretty flat. Any nasty wind out that way?
Looking forward to this, I hear great things about the ride and the support.
Myself and a neighbor are driving up in the morning. AC and own bed a plus

The course is pretty flat, but the wind is usually horrible, they might want to think about a name change to the windier than hell, lol!
last year the wind wasn't too bad....although as I remember, it was a headwind for the last 30 miles or so....and yes the course is pretty flat.

The routes are very flat like everyone has said. The last 15-30 miles are up a slight grade on an access road there always seems to be a nice 15-20 mph head wind.
I usually make a weekend out of it. We have a standing reservation at a nice hotel accross from the start. We wake up and ride 1 block to the event....very nice.
I missed last year but look forward to this year. Im doing the 100 miles.

Ha, that reminds me of the Livestrong course I did in Austin back in 03. The route finished on a looong false flat straight into a headwind. Needless to say, I limped to the finish on that day.
Thanks all, my training has been pretty similar, long flat rides in fairly windy conditions. Now I just need to start prepping for the heat.

I was told/heard/read that 70% of the riders do the 100. There were 11,500 riders last year, so if that is true about 3500 did the shorter rides.
well looks like I won't be able to do HHH (and I have reservations, paid my fees etc.),

To be honest I really was looking forward to HHH. Now to tell the wife we aren't riding. . .

I'm not sure if i'm racing again this year or if I'm going to ride to enjoy the rest stops and the atmosphere. If you race, stay toward the front but out of the wind.
Have fun.

I'll be there again this year, trying to break the 4:45 I had last year. I'm much better prepared and with a lot more miles and heat rides under my belt, so I think I can do it. I would love to wear my BF Texas jersey but it'll be the solid white long sleeve to try and beat the heat instead. I'll be starting up front with the bents, so see y'all at the finish!

I'm 90%, pending vacation approval. Will do the cat 4 race and try to stay upright and sit in. From what I've heard, it's fast and squirrelly at first then a pack sprint for those that are left. Should suit me, as long as I can keep food and water in me.

The farthest I've ever ridden on a bike is 30 miles... on a mountain bike. I didn't have on some good riding shorts and it really tore up my butt! Other than that, it wasn't a big deal. I was with a couple of friends and we were just riding for fun. I run and walk about 5 miles a day (half and half) in the heat, and have been every day for two months. When it comes to stamina, I can only look "back in the day" when I played a little basketball in college and know what it's like to be exhausted, so thirsty and mouth so dry, you're tounge is about hanging out of your mouth, and I know what's it like, mentally, to physically keep going when there just ain't nothing left. Guess what - now, I'm 49 years old, but I'm in pretty good shape. Alright, hit me over the head with some advice: I'm going to find a rode bike, and I'm going to ride the 100 miles in 7 hours. Am I crazy?

Yes, you are crazy. And yes, you can do it. I did my first HHH (my first century) on a mountain bike having only ever ridden 50 miles. Took me about 8 hrs, but I did it. Take your time, stop at all the rest areas, enjoy the ride. You only get one first century, make it a memorable one. After you finish your first one, you'll start gunnin' for time. 7 hrs. 6 hrs. 5 hrs. Crazy.

Just make sure you have an experienced rider help you get the right size bike, get fitted and give you some tips.
I won't promise you it'll be pleasant; you should expect some combination of sore ***, crotch, wrists, hands, neck, shoulders, knees etc. But it's certainly possible.
The one big variable is what HHH call's "Hell's Gate" which is the cutoff you have to make by a certain time in order to do the full 100. The cutoff time is variable depending on the heat / wind / humidity, and there have been years where lots of folks got turned onto the shortcut.
Again, read all the beginner threads and "how to buy a bike" threads, then get someone experienced to help you with the fitting.

Any insider tips on what to expect in the starting chutes and finishing area? Be there half hour before start? Two hours before the start? Try to come into the area on a certain street?
I'll be riding to the start from the nearby Best Western if that matters.
Also any packet pickup tips for out of towners getting in late on Friday?
Thanks.
Last year was my first century ride at HHH. We got to the start about 30 min earlly and lined up. You will walk your bike for about the first 10-25 min depending on where you start out at. Just dont clip in to your pedals to soon. I'm sure you'll see a few people not used to there pedals falling on the ground. Have fun and enjoy yourself just dont spend to long at the rest stops

I'm all registered up! I'm staying in the dorm at the chaparral campgrounds. not too bad if you can't find a hotel and/or are pressed for cash... its 40 bucks to stay friday night and you can check out after the ride, but if you want to stay one more night there its 30 dollars more. gotta bring your own towels and sleeping bag/bedroll but i think it'll do. price also included dinner friday night and breakfast saturday morning.
Only annoying thing is they only take check or cash and you have to pay before you get there. which means you have you mail your reservations to them. i also hear mosquitos are bad...
I'll be there. I'm staying at the Best Western that's north of the start. I paid the extra for the dinner, so I hope I can make it in time.

I rode 2 years ago and plan on riding again this year. I got there about 1:30 before the start and with some scooting and moving I was about 3 blocks from the start. Took me about 20 minutes to get to cross the start line. If you feel like being one of those people that squish past everyone and piss em all off then you could get there late. I would recommend about what I did with about 1:30 before the start. They try to get people to line up by their ride distance then expected speed but from my experience that did not work very well. There were no "chutes" it was just a MASSIVE start which I think was part of what this ride is.
Now I just need to keep trying to find accomodations, right now it is looking like tents or along those lines
