Do you carry Sunscreen on a ride?

How many of you take the time to apply sunscreen during a ride and what kind do you use?
Does anyone reapply during a long ride?

I still haven’t found one that holds up to the sweat and heat of Southern California. I just use my rash guard when swimming, but this really isn’t an option for riding, or does anyone make a long sleeved undershirt for sun protection instead of warmth?

Have you tried Bullfrog?

I "discovered" this stuff back when I was teaching SCUBA. Long days in the sun in and out of the ocean water, lugging gear back and forth and pulling on mask and taking off mask... it was the only thing that would work to preserve my blue eyed complexion.

I use it these days when I race sail. It is non greasy.

I don't tend to wear sunscreen when I bike as I tend to wear long sleeved jerseys/T shirts... and have done so even in the middle of Baja or the desert. My ears are the only things exposed. I guess the helmet gives enough shade for them.

Try Bullfrog... go for the Quik gel (http://www.bullfrogsunblock.com/quik.html)... it is alcohol based, but the stuff dries quickly and then does not wear or sweat off... you have to use soap and water to remove it.

Yeah i carry a bottle in my pannier. I like the spray on stuff, quick and ez before the ride. The sport spray on seems to hold up to my sweat, although addmittedly i don't sweat much during the ride... it's only when i stop that the water works start.

Shower the night before your ride and apply at that time so it can absorb for several hours.
Awaken the next morning and slather on another coat before making breakfast. You'll be well-protected.
My favorite is Neutrogena Ultra Sheer Dry-Touch (http://www.neutrogena.com/content_169.asp) with Helioplex sunblock in SPF 55.

I apply before a ride. I don't really re-apply during the ride. I do like to get a nice tan so I use a store brand spf 15. I feel that it stops my from burning but still lets me tan.

Coppertone Sport 50spf does pretty well for not running into my eyes, and I sweat quite a bit. I bring some with me in a little squeeze bottle when I'm out on a century or longer. Depending on how intense the sun is, I might reapply the stuff 2 or 3 times.

I carry (sunblock) concealed.Good idea. It probably goes on a little cooler than if it's baking in the sun the whole time.
Probably receives the most protection from direct rays if stored in an under-the-saddle bag.

Seriously.... the components of the sunscreen will last longer if they are kept cool and in the dark. I used to be involved in a study of sunscreen behaviour and materials. You'd be suprised how little time it took for the level of protection to reduce following application. As for anything with a factor rating over 25, forget it, the numbers become meaningless. Also, look for a product that offers protection against BOTH UVA and UVB rays. This is a subtle, but important point as far as protecting the skin is concerned.

Can't imagine a product with that kind of staying power. Think I'll give it a try. / Thanks for the reminder. Last Thursday I ran into a cyclist who had had is nose dug to shreds to get out all the cancer. He is now ok, but the Dr said, he can't ride for three months, following surgery.

Some of this stuff is not healthy. Anything is better then bare skin exposed to UVB/UVA rays.......take a moment to review some of the sun screens that are more toxic then others. Enjoy

Anything with a very high SPF does have a bit of "marketing hype" associated with it. I just happen to enjoy the light & pleasing fragrance of the Neutrogena product. :)

i use/carry it with me (bullfrog alcohol base "quikgel" spf 36-45 water/sweat-proof sunblock) while on tour, when you are "out-there" all day.

I'd have thought that if you are wearing a helmet, this would offer a bit of shade from direct sun. Hence, sunscreen on the forehead (and therefore at risk of running in to the eyes) is not so important.

What do you all reckon?

While the Neutrogena is good, I've only found it with fragrance. Can't stand the smell of fragrance in sun block, or hand lotion for that matter. I spend long hours kayak fishing in Texas and use Banana Boat. Recently, BB came out with a 50 SPF with the same basic ingredients as Neutrogena..maybe just a bit less. No fragrance, so that's what I'll use.

When doing lots of long rides (5 to 10 hrs) in SoCal I used to keep a tube on the bike for days when I forgot and to reapply. You can apply from the tube on the bike while riding up the mtns. I've been doing short rides now, and just try to remember to apply ahead of time. I never apply above the eyes, and don't get much sun up there. Pretty much any water resistant one works fine for me.

No, I apply about 15 minutes before I ride to allow it to soak in but don't take it along because I can't re-apply it when I am really sweaty anyway.
