With treking bars and a Thompson Stem. Should I use the index feature or friction.......

Or should I just try them both and decide.....probably.

+ or - ?

I like friction myself. Makes fiddling with adjustments obsolete. I rode my mtb with thumb shifters set to friction for many years.

I was leaning that way.

I like having my front at friction - no more of the "one gear that rubs" nonsense for me! - and the rear at indexed. The DA barends have a really solid "CLICK" on indexing, makes it really fun!

If you're using a Nashbar Trekking bar, make sure you have sufficient clearance between the bar ends or the shifters will overlap.
