So I own a Garmin 360 for work, and couldnt live without it. However, it obviously is not usable cycling. And Ive found except for maybe Bear Grylls, its useless hiking as well.
I was considering getting a Garmin 705, not only for cycling, but to use in some backpacking as well. I know it seems hit or miss regarding people and their 705 experiences in cycling, but does anyone use it in the car or hiking much at all?

I have the 705 with the City Nav NT maps. I already owned the Garmin Topo US maps. I also own a 60CSx that I have used extensively for backpacking and auto navigation.
For auto navigation is works just fine. Screen size is not optimal and the POI search features are not as robust but it works ok. There is no dash mount yet so I may improvise in the future if I use it very much for this purpose.
I have not used it for backpacking yet. Some of the issues I can see for backpacking are: internal battery, no magnetic compass & limited screen size. It would be usable but I have been spoiled by my 60CSx. When I purchased the 705 I had planned on selling my 60CSX but have not done so yet. I am going to wait till after I do a pack trip with the 705.

I am quite happy with the Edge 705 for cycling. It has its quirks, but in general it works quite well. The most annoying problem is the function of auto pause. It auto pauses when you stop completely which is great. However when walk your bike across an intersection it starts up again. This trashes average mph. It needs to have a user set threshold for starting up that is faster then walking speed. The other issue with it, is that the fonts are other either too large or two small. This compares poorly with the on-bike legibility of other bicycle computers. However all things considered, I highly recommend it.

Speed setting for auto pause is adjustable. I always have trouble locating it in the menus though. I think I currently have mine set for 2 mph but I may up it to 3 - my walking speed.

Even the 305 has an adjustable auto-pause. It's found under training on the 305.. perhaps the same on the 705?
I have mine set to 2.5 mph and I think that's a bit slow. 3 mph is a better setting to allow walking the bike.

MENU>TRAINING>AUTO PAUSE/LAP>AUTO TIMER PAUSE>CUSTOM SPEED> .... set the speed to pause at.
