Clydesdales/Athenas (200+ lb / 91+ kg) - Today's snake sighting...

Went for a 35 mile ride on my Specialized road bike and came across this little guy. He was non venomous but had a weird salmon color. Anyway, MissBumble found a snake last week, and I found one today, so I guess we're have a snakey summer. Party on!

Oh my stars. You win!! My snake was just a black snake lying kind of curvy on the path. Your snake is very snake like. Bravo!

I seen 2 garter snakes on my last ride. I live in the midwest so we do not have anything exotic.

I did have a groundhog bark at me the other day :)

Several years ago, I was hauling ass on my favorite singletrack when I came upon a 8' snake sunning herself on the trail. I was probably 15' away from her and knew I had to either slam on the brakes or just hop over it. I chose to slam on the brakes, but couldn't stop on the pebbly trail. I then quickly pedaled and hopped over it (probably at 5mph... lol).

The snake was probably 4' and 1" in diameter, but in time, she's grown to 8' and 4" in girth. Man, what a huge snake.

I saw four of them on tour, all rat snakes, three on the Great Allegheny Passage, one on the C & O Canal Towpath (Neil F. almost ran it over). One stretch of the GAP is known for copperheads, so I was careful around there.

I saw lots of turtles on the C & O, including a snapper I almost ran over.

Appears to be a Texas Corn Snake. Very popular as pets. I came across a Western Rattlesnake in full rattle in Folsom, CA. I was kinda curious but my wife wisely pointed out that I was not the "Crocadile Hunter" and should stand off.

I saw good size Water Moccasin the other day with riding through the college campus. Was swimming in a pond and when I had to stop I noticed it coming in my direction. They are super aggressive and it was really hot so I figured it was not going to be slow. I clipped in and pedaled off.

I ran across several rattlesnakes when we lived in Colorado. The first one, I was hiking down a single-track trail on a hillside, and the snake plopped down on the trail behind me and started rattling. I guess I had walked right past it. That gets your attention in a hurry. In that area, they are some sort of Prairie Rattler that doesn't get too big- maybe 42" or so, not like the eastern/western diamondbacks.

Around here, all I've seen on trails have been little snakes about a foot long of unknown species, and the green ones about 18" long. Some on dirt trails, some out on the MUP.

Hey Spikedog, you're good. I checked wiki and here's what they have to say Corn Snake (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Corn_Snake). This snake is not typically found in California, so it's probably a pet that got loose or something.

I was playing golf in Australia a few years ago and walking up the fairway and literally in front of me was an Australian Brown snake approx 6 to 7 feet long

I have never run so fast in all my life :) and ever time a ball was any sort of rough after that it stayed in the rough so we soon ran out of balls,

I think it is a corn snake, he's colored for camo and resemblance to piosonous snakes for protection.

Next time, you gotta pick up that non poisonous guy and get a pic with him draped on your beautiful specialized bike!!!!!!!!!!!

Very wise! Last summer I think, someone got bitten by a brown snake and died. They had been mucking around in long grass/rough bush. The saddest thing was that noone knew how to do First Aid for the bite and that probably contributed somewhat to the death.

Be careful out there guys!

I caught a snake today off of a sidewalk while I was riding today. It was about a one foot long garden snake (lame)... scared the crap out of another lady that was walking down the sidewalk.

Was yesterday national snake day or what? I nearly ran one over yesterday. It was near the end of my ride and I was at the bottom of a hill, so I didn't stop to get a closer look. The little guy was only about 2 feet long.

And since people are telling stories about the biggest snake, I'll share my smallest snake story. One day last fall my daughter and I were walking out to get the mail. It had been raining so the driveway was a little wet. I looked down and saw what I thought was a worm. Since my daughter loves all types of slimy, crawly things I started to show it to her when I saw what I thought was a tongue flicking out of the front of the "worm". It was at that point I realized it was a snake. At first I thought it was a baby, but to make a long story short, it turned out to be an adult worm snake. We gently picked it up and brought it inside. I let my daughter put it in a glass bowl for a little while, with some wet leaves for cover, so we could learn about it. After a few hours, and lots of pictures, we brought it back outside and let it go in the woods. Until then, I never even knew these things existed.

Saw a Michigan Massasauga rattlesnake along Paint Creek Trail just west of Adams Road the other day... just trying to be invisible on the edge of the trail as I passed by. Abouy 20 inches or so

When I was 18 I was riding my bike and came across a rattle snake. I started playing with it, I took off my shirt and was teasing the snake. He bit me and actually severed the radial artery in my wrist. Not a good day.

This thread reminds me of the Far Side cartoon where God's making snakes. He says "hey, these things are easy" (or something to the effect).

Only snake i have seen on my daily commute has been a little garter snake. I do see a family of beavers. I want to take one home for a pet. I see tons of geese, ducks, some very large toads and a couple chipmonks.

Red coachwhip FTW!

I thought it was a corn snake at first, too. The coloring is close, but the patterning doesn't match. In addition, corn snakes tend to have the same coloring from head to tail. And, as someone else pointed out, they're not native to California.

That's a Red Racer or Red Whipsnake.I've been "into" sankes for 36 years. Had one as well. Fast buggers and rather "bitey".

That looks like a Cottonmouth or a Water snake.Hard to tell in the pic
