"The 33"-Road Bike Racing - OLN racing coverage

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

How comprehensive is OLN's coverage of road bike racing? I just found out that I have the channel and I'm hoping that they cover more than just the TdF.
Thanks,

Not sure what they covered last spring, but besides the TDF they had daily live coverage of the Vuelta. They also had hour recaps of some fall classics.
Speaking of the TDF, I just got the 12 hour 2003 TDF DVD and it is pretty cool. They did give short thrift to the early flat stages though.

Holy cow, the 2004 Tdf. Who wins? ;)
OLN covers spring classics, Tour of Lankawie (malaysia),
Giro D'Italia, TdF and Vuelta.
While its a bit thin on the classics they do show
a whole lot of cycling.
I haven't seen a list of what they are showing this year
but their coverage in the past has been great (well great for US, not so good if this were Europe :D )

You won't find any better coverage on cycling than OLN unless there's some satellite station that does better.

Come on, guys. It's a 12 hour two disc set. Give him a chance to watch it! He can tell us tomorrow whether Lance won or not.

They also showed Paris-Nice last spring. And same day coverage of Paris-Roubaix.
Hay I'm dyslexic and I still read 2003 as 2003!! Anyone out there interested in a pair of reading glasses??

Right now, it seems like OLN tries to make it appear that they don't even cover cycling.
If anyone catches them releasing any sort of schedule for any road races soon (website), please post a note of it here!

If my memory serves me right, that's a lot more live coverage than last year. I think the only thing we got live last year was TdF and maybe Paris-Roubaix? So hard to remember...

The Vuelta was live also.
15 years ago this kind of coverage would have been a dream for me. I was stuck getting my news from Velo News and TDF footage consisted of 30 minutes nightly on ESPN, complete with pretty shots of sunflower covered fields and feel-good pieces about various riders.
Consider yourself lucky, in CT most Cable Companies do not give OLN as an option. I have asked several times with no success. The only option is to drop cable and go with the alternatives.
That is exactly what I did. I went out and got satallite just so I could get OLN which is the only way you can watch the TDF. The cream on the top is the coverage of the Giro and the Vuelta.

Just so you all know, OLNtv has an updated schedule on their website.
This looks sweet.
Paris-Nice and Criterium International have daily coverage in March
Milan-San Remo, Tour of Flanders, Paris-Roubaix, Amstel Gold, and Liege-Bastogne-Liege all same day coverage this spring, as well as a few others being shown live.
Daily coverage of the Tour of Romandie and Tour de Suisse this year as well...
And there will only be three Tour de France stages that won't be shown live.
Yay!

I receive OLN on digital cable, but I dont think is the same channel. Every day there's old/fat dudes in camouflage fishing and hunting.

Yup, sadly that's it! From what you read on this board, it would seem like OLN is a cycling only cable channel. Unfortunately, related to its total programming, cycling represents a VERY small piece of the OLN pie. However, since they are the only game in town that covers any cycling - we have no choice but to take what we can get.
Seriously, 90% (that may be a low estimate) of their programing time is dedicated to guns or fishing, with an occasional rodeo thrown in the mix.

My cable provider, Cablevision which is digital doesn not have OLN, and a satellite just for OLN is to much money a month. I want OLN!

Have you looked into Dish? Before my cable company got OLN I looked into a dish and it was actually cheaper. Only problem is no local channels. Luckily they added OLN before I got a chance to switch.
Has anyone been able to get through to OLN's website? It seems to be down or something, I haven't been able to check it out for days!

Unfortunately, OLN Canada only covers the Tour... all of those other races you lucky Americans get don't make it up here. :( Satellite or cable, it's the same channel. It's tempting to purchase an illegal satellite system to pick up on the American OLN so I can catch some of the other races. Anyone feel like taping them for me? :)
Mike
Hello.
A few extra OLN shows that haven't been touched on in this thread, yet.
A show called "Bicycle Journal" has been broadcast the past couple of years during the season at irregular timeslots. It has been a Magazine-style show with light features; i.e. touring California wine country, new technology features, a piece on Graham Watson-photojournalist, etc.
Last season, in the timeslot currently held by "Picabo Street's Snow Zone" (Thursdays at 9PM Eastern), OLN broadcast an hourlong SportsCenter-style news show on summer outdoor sports, with cycling comprising about 75% of the content. Bob Roll was one of the co-hosts.
Finally, OLN will cover many more races than are currently scheduled. Some races in Europe are still negotiating their broadcast rights with the European networks. OLN usually buys U.S. rights from them. Also, smaller races from the U.S. usually buy time from OLN to show highlites. One such example is the Nature Valley Grand Prix in Minnesota, which has done just that the last two years.
Don't worry, once the season starts in earnest, you'll probably get a minimum of 3 hours a week of road cycling programming. And during the 3-plus weeks of the Tour de France coverage, you'll come to recognise Phil Liggett's face before your own.

Hello.
A bit of bad news.
According to the latest issue of Velonews, OLN will not be carrying "Summer SportsZone", the summer outdoor sports SportsCenter-style news program I mentioned in my previous post. They will be carrying the weekly reality show featuring the U.S. Postal team and Lance Armstrong instead.
Wondering if anyone here will broadcast the sport once Lance retires, I remain

I guess they can't cut into the fishing reruns to run this show once/week. Oh well, the Postie show should be fun to watch also. :)

summer sportzone was the shizzy... It was probably the best show on Thursday nights... the Postie show might not be too bad... I wonder if Bobke is gonna do anything with that...

Unfortunately, OLN Canada only covers the Tour... all of those other races you lucky Americans get don't make it up here.
Instead, we get such fine fare as:
OLN paints the town red, blue and various other colours with the World Cup Paintball Championships - the paintball event of the year. Two one-hour specials will feature the world's best professional five-man teams battling for the world title.
Grrrr....
I've been e-mailing OLN Canada regularly, encouraging them to pick up OLN America's cycling coverage. I invite you to join the crusade, meltable:

Good luck, I think people have been emailing them for years, including myself, with no luck. They don't give a **** about the viewers.

I never missed a show until OLN replaced Brett Haber with Kirsten Gum. After 15 minutes of watching Gum fumble through her scripted lines, I turned it off and never watched "Summer SportsZone" again.

Could someone PLEEEEEEEZ copy and paste the text to at least the Spring Classics schedule on OLN...or more if you're feeling nice.
My computer here at work keeps giving me the "Cannot find DNS Server" message and I can't get any work done if I don't see this years OLN cycling schedule.
BTW, my cable guy is coming Friday...I CAN'T WAIT! :D
Here you go, lil' Parakeet.
By my count, we've got over 100 days of cycling to watch this season. My satellite will be installed this weekend. Wooop!

There seems to be some kind of problem at OLNTV.com. I can't get through to it and I've been hearing from others with the same problem. I wish there was some way to let them know about it. Maybe someone who can get through to the site can tell them about this?

I'm at home now and it works just fine.
