I needed something to combat my coarse bumfluff - it's somewhere in between bumfluff and real facial hair at the moment - whilst still catering to my pathetically girly sensitive skin which is often left rashed and irritated for a while after shaving despite using different methods.

I'd heard about these King Of Shaves products and how awesome they're supposed to be, so I decided to give it a shot. I picked up the "AlphaGlide Shaving Gel - Sensitive Skin" to be my test mule.

http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x107/BFG161291/AlphaGlide_ALS_v2_info.jpg

At the whim of my company at the time (I shall mention they were 3 females), I also purchased the "K-GL Soother. Post Shave - Daily Use".

http://i186.photobucket.com/albums/x107/BFG161291/K-GL_Soother_v4_info.jpg

Now back to business. The Gel was not like ordinary shaving creams upon first contact - it felt more like a hair gel than shaving cream. Either way, I lathered up. Well, I guess that would be the wrong term to use, it doesn't really foam at all and it felt like rubbing hair gel onto my face. So that was a little different, because I couldn't see if I had missed a little nook because there was no big visible chunk of foam on my face to start with.

First buzz of my Mach 3 razor (with a pretty new blade, I whacked a new one on last time I shaved which was Sunday morning) felt weird. There was no usual scraping and it felt like the razor made no contact with my face whatsoever. It wasn't until I decided to give that same spot a 3rd go that I realised the razor was in fact making contact with my skin, because I cut my cheek. It leaves a residue of some sorts, for lack of a better word, despite having actually shaved in that spot, which is a little off putting, and makes it difficult to know where you have and have not yet shaved, or whether you missed a spot.

I reluctantly continued shaving and I was somewhat impressed to be honest. I seem to have gotten a closer, smoother shave with the King of Shaves gel than my usual Gillette gel (Well, it dispenses as a gel but lathers to a dense foam). This stuff is bloody adhesive or something, as it took some time to fully rinse my face of all of the leftover gel and residue left behind off of my face. So i rinsed and patted dry, just like it says (I decided to follow the directions on the back to a T for fair testing purposes) on the tube of gel.

Well, I can safely say that the King of Shaves gel certainly works better than the countless Gillette gels/foams I have used before and the only gripe I have is the weird residue that is seemingly absorbed into your face, making it hard to tell what has been shaved and what hasn't.

Onto the "Soother". I must say, applying some form of a moisturizer post-shave is a completely new concept to me. Of course i wash my face with water, but that's usually it - maybe some aftershave if I'm going to a rather jazzy function, but that is very rare. So I traversed forward into the world of soother with a little intrepidation. The tube says "After shaving, pat face dry. Then gently massage a small amount of KG-L Soother into shaved skin until the blue micro particles are absorbed. Repeat after every shave". I think I used a little too much as I wasn't quite expecting it to come hurtling at the palm of my hand out the squeezy tube quite like it did.

The Soother I cannot really tell the effects of, maybe give it a few trial runs - using the old Gillette stuff/just water instead of the King of Shaves shaving gel to test whether I notice a difference. I will report back on that one later if needs be.

Long story short, the King of Shaves system gave me a very close shave despite following the same grain as when using the Gillette products and my skin was left 100% un-irritated and smoother than I think it has ever been. It loses points for the weird factor of the residue, and its price which was rather steep compared to Gillette products.

Final Rating: 8/10 Asian Mullets.

Pricing:
King of Shaves AlphaGlide Shaving Gel (175mL)l: $10.45AUD at Coles.
King of Shaves K-GL Soother (100mL): $10.95AUD at Coles.

No those prices are not a misprint, the Soother cost more than the gel.

I don't really care whether you enjoyed reading my review, whether you agreed or disagreed or whether you think I should have bothered in the first place - I just felt like reviewing some shaving cream.

I shave my head, face and neck daily. I am a fan of shaving oil and a two-blade Gillette Plus.

I've also heard a lot about this (http://www.somersets.com.au/index.html) stuff. But something that comes in a 12mL bottle and says it's worth 90 shaves has me doubting it. I'll give it a go some day too.

I shaved with straight edge for years (cheap). Now I use wussy mach 3 (tres expensive).

Straight edge isn't for everyday type shaving, though.

I got a beard like a thorn thicket.

Compared to the barbasol I usually use, that stuff feels a little greasy. **My wife uses that stuff, and I had ran out of barbasol** But yeah, that stuff works well.

Actually, the 12-18 ml. bottles of shaving oil do last for quite a few shaves. You wet your face, squeeze out about three-four drops of oil into your palm, apply and shave. Apply more water, not oil, as needed. I use double that amount, but then again, I am shaving my head as well. A single bottle lasts me for months. I particularly like it for travel, since a bottle of oil and one razor take up very little room in my travel kit.

Using the oil gives me a closer shave than using shaving foams, gels or creams. I have also used the King of Shaves products and they do a nice job as well.

My beard is so heavy it plugs up the fancy double and triple blade and even single blade safety razors. I burn up the titanium blades on my electric in about 6 months or less. The only good shave I get is from an antique Missouri Blue Steel straight razor.

barbasol.... Gary Hall Jr was on the can for a while. I still use it because this overly cocky American swimmer told me too

Barbasol for the face, and Head Slick shave cream for the head. The latter is very, very smooth- applied with a shaving brush, you need just one pump (about 1/4tsp) to do the whole melon:

I always shaved my head with barbasol. Of course normally my head got butchered...and cuts on your head feel really great in a pool full of chlorine. I highly recommend it. Glad my swimming days are over :-P

I shave my head and I keep my neck clean, but I don't shave my face. I also shave my legs (up to the bike shorts.)

I use Gillette or Barbasol shaving foam for all of it. It just depends on which one is on sale, or which one they have at the grocery store I'm in.

I have to agree with botto here. The only problem is I find it difficult to clean my razor after using this stuff... it takes a lot of rinsing. Maybe it's not necessary, but I like a clean razor.

I read that water left on the razor blades after shaving is the major cause of blades getting dull as a result of oxidization . It is recommended that you dry the blades well after use. I have begun using 'canned air' to quickly dry the the blades. Can't hurt.

I've recently started using cold water, to rinse the blades as I shave as opposed to hot, as well as using cold on my face before applying cream/gel/foam or what not. The difference has been nothing but miraculous. I generally shied away from shaving everyday as my neck would be quite red and irritated after the second day of straight shaving. No more redness, no more breaking out. I can't believe I've spent so many years using hot water. The blades clean out easier, and supposedly the cold water helps them stay sharp longer.
