Anyone interested in a Formula Hub Group buy?
I think $100 could be done if we got 15 people or so.
Front hub comes in 20/24 holes, rear comes in 24/28. Shimano 10 speed, Campy 9/10.

These hubs could be built with a set of Kinlin 27mm rims into a set of 1390 gram wheels for about $260 or so. If anyone's interested, I could build them for you for a few bucks.

VERY interested. Interested in the hubs and a complete wheelset. What do you recommend for a 190lb rider?

I'm almost 190, and as you can see, and am planning on 24/28. Rims will probably be something tubular...not sure yet. If you want to go clincher, I'd recommend DT RR 1.2s

I'm very interested, especially if they are in that nice grey colour and Campagnolo 9/10.
Wonder if they would throw in some track hubs...
I'm interested. Can we get more information about when they would come in?

I am definitely interested.

They said 30-45 days. I'd be a little pessimistic and say 60 days, but who knows.

You can definitely get Campy, but the ones I built with were black. Of course, it *says* grey, so they've probably changed them in the past six months or so.

If you're doing the Kinlin rims, I'd do the 24/28 with the 30 mm deep rims.
Hey ElJamoquio, could you PM me with an estimate for a set of 20/24 27mm kinlins? The wheelbuilder I have talked to before would charge me extra to use my own hubs.
Thanks

ElJ -- just getting plenty of opinions. I go 165-170, and was planning a set of these with niobium 30mm. I would like to do 20/24. Do you think I should go 24/28? We're not talking a lot of weight there. To be honest, a big motivator for this project is that I want to build my own wheels. Maybe the occasional group ride, race, and nice weekend rides.

tempted. what's the feedback on them?
If I'm not mistaken the Latvian national team has these hubs (high end Formula hubs at any rate) laced to some carbon rims. Multiple hubs crapped out after about three months of use.

I won't say I'm the most experienced person in the world on them - but since no one else is chiming in, they built well, and have lasted well for me. I'm not the heaviest rider in the world, either.
If you're looking for more durability, there's an equivalent version with some steel (rather than titanium) parts that's 30 grams heavier.

I'm betting we could swing that by them, but the information on the track hubs is scarce - I was semi-considering such a hub for myself.

Advertised weights are 68 grams and 210 grams. In my experience that's a hair optimistic.
I'd be interested, but I am not sure I can commit. I should probably go 24/28, 20/24 probably isn't enough for 170 pounds, right?

I've ridden 20/20 (mavic aksiums) without issue on NY roads and i'm around 165lbs.

I'm in for a set of 24 front / 28 rear. You say the time and place for the moneys(deposit/payment).

Just saw this...(thanx ericcox). These are the same hubs that Mike Garcia brands as Speedcific Serenity and distributes. I looked high and dry for a Formula direct distributor (through my LBS) that would sell these hubs and I came up mucho short.
I have built 1 set of wheels with these hubs so far and I am in the process of building 2 more sets. The two I am building are as folows:
Kinlin 30mm rims
F-24 radial DT revolutions
R-24 (2X NDS DT Revolutions, 1X DS DT Competitions)
F-24 radial DT revolutions
R-28 (3X NDS DT Revolutions, 1X DS DT Competitions)
brass nipples
Weights for the lighter set come in at 1500g even - actual measured. The other is within 10g or so.
The set I am riding is a set laced to DT Swiss RR 1.1 rims. I have about 1,000 miles on them so far and no complaints. I love the way they feel. They are as follows:
F-28 2X Wheelsmith DB17
R-28 2X both sides Wheelsmith DB17 - Just what I went with...
Front is overbuilt for sure.
Rear is perfect for me so far.
These weigh in at 1560g
The hubs come in a Shimano 8/9(/10), Shimano 10 only, and Campy 10 freehub body.
If someone can get Formula in with this I am in for a couple of sets at least...especially if you can get the rear at $100 or lower. I was under the impression that distribution under private label (Speedcific) and OEM were the only options for these hubs in the US market.
Word of caution: the rear hub is PAIRED DOGBONE DRILLING!!!!! This means that the holes are NOT equidistant around the flange. They are put in sets of 2 with a slot in beteen to fit aero spokes. This also means that the offset between flanges is lower than normal. This will change your spoke calculations.
Mike Garcia always says just add "0.15" to your X number. I have 3 sets of wrong length spokes that say he's wrong. I am sitting on the 2 builds now because once again the spoke lengths were wrong. When I get done I will post the combinations that I know.
The dogbone nature really trows the calc. The .15 compensates for the offset change between flanges, but the non-equal spacing really has a greater affect the lower your spoke count. As it is I had to be really careful lacing the 3X 28 hole NDS...move the pattern 1 hole and it doesn't work (runs into the axle). As it is now It works great....reallyf'd up. Not a straight forawrd flange to build on.
FWIW.
If it's your first build I would recommend you stick with a normal lacing and let someone else figure out what length spokes you need.
Also....with the rim combinations I have used almost all of the spokes have been custom lengths. This means your spokes will have to be made to order by a shop that can cut and roll them. Many can, just FYI.
FWIW.

I'm tentatively interested. Are the rear hubs really paired dogbone drilling? Not sure if I'd want to deal with that. If someone could convince me that it's worth it, I might be on board. Pending that, do you have a good source for Kinlin rims? If so, I might want to buy the tubular rims from you as well to save from having to order from multiple places, in which case I'd probably want to build a Shimano Compatible 20h radial front, 24h 2x rear.

Sorry, I missed this earlier - personally I'd do 28 in the rear; 70% of your weight is on the rear wheel, all of the drive torque is on the rear wheel, and with the dish, the spoke set-up is much worse in the rear.
20/28 if you're looking for a slightly more aero set of wheels, assuming you aren't doing Paris-Roubaix.

Is fairwheelbikes.com the only source for kinlin rims? Not that $60 isn't a reasonable price, I just wonder what else is out there. Doesn't seem to be too many 24h options with 30mm depth at similar weights.

I'm working on the KinLin's. It'll probably be a week or two before I have an answer there.
If you're antsy, Oddsandendos, Fairwheelbikes, IRD... the last I checked, Fairwheel had the best price. I don't know why you'd be antsy, though, as the hubs are at least a month and a half away.

Also I would recommend to everyone to get the SHimano 10spd only freehub body if you are running 10spd.
The splines on the 10spd only are taller and the material (Aluminum) on these bodies is very thin and does tend to notch pretty easily. I am riding the 10spd only body and I have notching with 1,000 miles.
CyLowe is riding a 9spd body with probably 2,000-3,000 on it and it was notched bad enought that it took some serious work to get his cassette off. That said it came off and I was able to file out the notches so that it's still working.
I'd be interested if you can make extra freehubs available as a part of this as well? If so I would add quite a few for myself. 2-3 Shimano 10's a few Shimano 9's and a Campy or 2.....

One last question.....what is the shipping going to be (ballpark)? Are they shipping from the US, or are we talking on the boat shipping prices?
