Panama, Besides the beaches there is an old AirForce radar installation in the forest that has been converted into a hotel/BandB. The rooms are at canopy level plus they have trails through out the forest. Columbia is just beautiful as is Costa Rica.

We do hope to go to Peru/Bolivia either at Easter time or June/July. Never been to South America. A new continent for us...We hope to travel to all continents in our life time except for Antarctica. My wife is not interested in that.
Don't think Peru will be a bike trip..Too unfamiliar with this part of the world.. Actually some friends cycled in Chile. They enjoyed that ...Crossed over the Andes into Argentina's Lake district. Said it was great.
Peru is too wild and we are too unfamiliar with its ways.Highlight will be the Andes and Machu Pichu.. I have read somewhere there is a mountain bike ride from Cuzco, Peru to the Amazon..Supposed to be one of the greatest descents in the world..I have problem with height. Not for me. Besides, who would want to do a bunny hop over an anaconda... After The Andes we want to take the traine down to Lake Titicaca and on into La Paz...Look forward to it..With luck maybe I will over come altitude sickness and ride up to Machu Pichu.?

Hmmm...it sucked when I was there, looking at Medellin through the sights of a GAL5.

Seriously, my niece spend six months in Santiago, Chile on a work-study program. She absolutely loved it. Can't tell you exactly what to see, as she said she saw "everything."

Buenos Aires is said to be a mix of Paris and New York. If you like big cities, it's a good one. I have a lot of family there. I haven't been there in twelve years, but loved it when I went. I spent about 90% of my time staying with family in the city. If you go during US winter, it's summer down there. Many BA residents have apartments in Mar del Plata and it's a beach resort town with gambling, and many hotties on the beach. If you go during our summer and like to ski, there is some great skiing in the southern part in the Andes.

Go to the out of the way places, walk around, go in the little shops, visit the local places of importance, talk to the people in your poor spanish, listen to their poor english. This was the way my Dad visited a country and he always had a great time.

Argentina is the most European Latin American country. Never been there but on my short list to visit. Costa Rica is beautiful too and although it is a smaller country it has a lot to offer. I would advise against Panama (too expensive - everything is quoted in dollars) as well as Columbia (unless you like being on the evening news).
My two trips for this year are:
1) Thailand
2) Costa Rica or Brazil
Where ever you decide to go be sure to check out the State Dept's travel warnings (again, unless you like being on the evening news).

Define what is gal5?
Our CAS team carried these crazy M16 mods (as in the original M16s, not the A1/A2 versions) they called GAL5s. They could fire hell from the barrels...empty a 30 rounder in no time. Not sure WTF it really was, just know what I was told.
