Tandem Cycling - Schwinn Duo Sport

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Sorry guys haven't been hanging out much here on the tandem site in the last year since since I rode cross country, but have built up a few retro rigs. Bought a winter house in Tucson and have been down here doing a remodel in very warm weather. That being said it will be heavenly riding in the winter. We bought down a couple of singles and and have been getting out in the morning for some miles, but both of my tandems are still up north and I have been missing them a lot, but I need a 3rd tandem like hole in the head. Then I saw a Schwinn Duo Sport on Craigslist and I neg. the price down to $300 it's in great shape stashed in a storage unit for 10 or 12 years. I am just looking for info - usual stuff like who made it for Schwinn? It is 18 speed half step gearing on 27 inch 40 hole Wolbers still has orginal tires in great shape, Wierd diacomp U brakes, Tange lugged frame with Mixte rear - weight is okay. I think with very work I can convert to 700c, but missing having a drag break.
Any info would be appreciated - thanks Mike

DuoSport?!
Did test riding/evaluating for the Schwinn years ago on the DuoSPort.
It was originally built in the US. Male/ladyback configuration (no lateral) with oversize tandem tubing.
A shorter than normal wheelbase (believe it was around 65") and it fit stoker Kay (she's 4'10 3/4" tall) so it should be suitable for shorter (up to 5'5"?) stokers only.
It rode and handled quite well and was stiff enough to be able to stand on uphills (Tangerine Rd, NW of Tucson) comfortably.
One minor issue on the prototype we had was that the eccentric was quite difficult to adjust as the BB shell was a bit out of round; so we had a machinist take a couple thousands off the eccentric to make it functional (this was aprototype after all).
It originally retailed at $1200 and, for that time, it was a bargain.
Schwinn was pleased enough with our 3 month test riding and evaluating that they told us to 'keep the tandem' for our efforts.
If it fits, it'll make a great 3rd tandem for your Tucson winter rides!
