when i got home today i found a roach in my kitchen (i usually get one every few months, this is the second in two months!), and flies, everywhere! i've killed about 20 in the past few hours. everytime i sit down for a while then get back up i notice a few more flying around. why? there's nothing in here to attract them.

I have always heard that you catch more flies with honey than you do with vinegar...

Maybe you have too much honey and not enough vinegar???

Probably fruit, house, or maybe cluster flies.

You get rid of fruit and house flies by taking away their food. You get rid of cluster flies by moving to a new house.

Probably your neighbors had their house/appt treated and the bugs migrated to yours in force. A fogger (http://www.killsbugsdead.com/fogger/) usually takes care of the problem pretty well. I have a small baby so a can't use those tho.

I've found the bug-light-zappers to be ineffective. The bug tape is also inefficient AND very nasty. Bugs hang around places with water. Even if you clean everything, they will concentrate in the bathroom and kitchen. Covering the drains on the kitchen sinks force them to the bathrooms. Then you can fog those.

TIme for a major cleaning of the premises. If the flies persist you have a possesed premises and need an exorcist.

The scratch and sniff dead salmon wall paper probably does as much as the fecal matter carpet in attracting the flies.

that's the thing. there was no food out or anything.

Might be a dead mouse under the fridge, washer, dryer, etc. What we see and what flies sense is very different I think. Tude can probably explain this better.

Urinate on the flies. It will scare the other flies away. No foolin'! Try it and report back!

Chopsticks....catch them with the chopsticks. But only catch them by their wings. When the others see this, they will think you are a Ninja will get out of your apartment.

Like I said. There's something stanky in there. Doesn't have to be food. Or dead bodies. Come on, THINK, dammit! DUH!!!

One fly entered your house laid eggs, made babies. It makes sense. . .

It might be you that's bringing them in. If you never wash your hair, you could have maggots gnawing at your scalp....

Check the rice or oatmeal or flour. You may have had one of them around long enough for the eggs that they contain to hatch.

A better question to ask: Why don't they leave?

Here you go..try this...
http://www.bugclinic.com/clusterfly.htm

if not try one of does ugly yellow strips that are full of glue that you hang, they really are attracted to that, the only problem is that its quite yuky... I never tried the cluster uster but it sounds good too!!

A sneaky place they hide and come into the house "as if out of nowhere" is the drain in the kitchen sink. My friend had this problem last summer. Her place was clean and it was a complete mystery.

Pour some boiling water down there and report back.
