Car alternator are e-bike motor

Have any of you tried using a care alternator as a 3 phase motor to drive a bike( or anything)? there are many hints that it can be done on the internet but I've found nothing useful as far as how to do it. Can you make a RC plane/helecopter controller work? Alternators are a dime a dozen if you know where to look and chinese made ESC's are light and very cheap.
