General Cycling Discussion - Peddles and more peddles

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

I have a Gary Fisher Advanced Mtn bike, and a Trek 1.5T Street. I am leaning towards getting clip in peddles, but also want ones that regular shoes can be used on. I only ride both bikes on the street.
Is there a peddle/Shoe combo I can use for both? Or do I need to go different peddles and shoes for each bike.
What about these Shimano's (http://www.amazon.com/Shimano-PD-M324-Pedal-SH-51-Silver/dp/B000XXXG7I/ref=pd_bbs_1?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods&qid=1214404346&sr=8-1)
I'm confused where to start.

Those are the ones I have. I was using those to commute on until just recently when I picked up my Tiogo Surefoot 8 pedals.
The shimanos are great and let you use any shoe. Perfect choice for someone who commutes or who is a little bit leary of going full clipless or someone who just wants the convenience of riding in normal shoes sometimes and clipless other times.

Pedal.
The pedals you mentioned would be a great place to start and would fit your needs.

So you think those are good for both style of bike? I don't mind two sets of peddles, I just don't want two pair of shoes.
What are the differences in clips? SH51 or what ever?

Gary, just make sure that both bikes have SPD pedals. Doesn't matter if the pedals are different, as long as they both use the SPD cleat system. I'm not familiar with the different models.

I am leaning towards Mountain Bike shoes because they are recessed and easier to walk in. I also need a wide shoe.
Do you think these will be an issue on the Trek 1.5T?

No.
For wide shoes you can also look at Lake and Sidi brands. Specialized shoes also run a bit wide from
what I've read here on the forums.

i just picked up the performance bike version, the forte campus. when wearing regular shoes, they seemed a little awkward when your shoe lands on the cleat side of the pedal. It works, but i felt a little uneasy when getting started to cross a road w/ traffic. probably best to flip them over to the flat platform side quickly. The platform did seem to have good traction on the shoe (only tried in the dry though). I don't have clipless shoes yet so no comments there.

My LBS said the Shimano pedals are the same and the clips are different. Wish I knew what clips to get.
