How do you fix/prevent squeeky brakes?

grease?

Good idea . Maybe something teflon-based?? :D

All brakes squeak when they're new. Are these older? Are you sure they're aligned to the rim correctly?

Assuming you've got rim brakes like cantilevers or V-brakes. As a first step, clean pads and rim with rubbing alchohol - if you just lubed your chain then probably you got some on the rim.

Then go and look at adjustment (http://sheldonbrown.com/cantilever-adjustment.html) to make sure there is toe in

If still squeaky then look at pads (are they old, are they hard, are they glazed, are there bits of metal or debris embedded in them)??? try breaking that out with a file, otherwise replace the pads and adjust accurately.

Toe-ing in the pads a millimeter or so usually fixes squealing brakes.
