I'm heading to Juneau in mid August. I'll be there a week. What should I see, do, hear, drink?

Watch out for bears. That's all I know about alaska, and is probably silly since your going to a fairly populated area.

Sounds like a cool trip. I don't know where Juneau is, but my suggestion is to go find the bus and spend a night there—meditate, think about what it all means. It may not be accessible in summer though. That dang river.

PLease take a photo of the "Glory Hole" soup kitchen. Im kicking myself for not doing it when I was in town a couple weeks ago.
Its in the middle of downtown on Franklin.

Also- check out sled dog "musher camp" It was my favorite of all the activities when I was on a cruise.

I heard that sled dog thing was quite expensive. . .

As I recall there are typically two types of bears in Alaska... black bears and grizzlies.

Because of the bears, you should always wear little bells on your shoes, and whenever you walk around you should remain aware of your surroundings and look for bear droppings.

If you see black bear droppings, you should be somewhat cautious, but you are probably ok as long as you don't startle them.

If you see grizzly droppings, you need to high tail it out of there.

The way to tell the difference between black bear and grizzly droppings is that grizzly droppings have little bells in them.

Eat at McDonalds, have a Coors Light and stay at Holiday Inn Express. Try to work in a visit to Wal-Mart and see a bunch of movies at the local cineplex.

Gosh that reminds me. Many many years ago on the way to the Grand Canyon (south rim), we came upon a McDonalds sort of in the middle of nowhere. Everything on the menu was twice as expensive as you would expect. They explained that expenses were high because the water had to be trucked in, and if I remember correctly, the employees lived in little cabins out back. Like I said, it was isolated! :lol: Or maybe it was just a hallucination. :twitchy:

I have blown a joke, especially a punchline... or maybe the candles on a birthday cake, but nothing approaching that implication. Not man, nor beast... that is not my style.

In light of the rising of human/grizzly bear conflicts, the Alaska Department of Fish and Game is advising hikers, hunters, and fishermen to take extra precautions and keep alert of bears while in the field.
"We advise outdoorsmen to wear noisy little bells on their clothing so as not to startle bears that aren't expecting them. We also advise outdoorsmen to carry pepper spray with them in case of an encounter with a bear.
It is also a good idea to watch out for fresh signs of bear activity. Outdoorsmen should recognize the difference between black bear and grizzly bear scat:

Black bear scat is smaller and contains lots of berries and squirrel fur. Grizzly bear scat has little bells in it and smells like pepper."

I have spent some tyme in Anchorage and farther North in Fairbanks area.
The tour trains are a GREAT way to see this state. Especially Denali

Chillcoot Charlies ~ a bar in Anchorage. Actually, several bars 'stuck' together and each have their own venue, Rock/country/Sports ... luv their motto "We rip off the other guy and pass the savings on to you.."

Not much I can say about farther north, I did go to Santas workshop ( it really is in the town, North Pole)
but he had gone south . Only some really friendly elves left.

HUGE country...
Like they say, you could cut the state in half and TEXAS would still only be the third largest state.
