Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. I'm declaring my car non-operational (because of exorbitant gas prices) for the next year. So, that means I don't need car insurance any more, right?
I just called my provider (Progressive), & they are saying the liability coverage will cover me as a pedestrian or bicyclist. In that case, I should retain it.
What does everyone else do in terms of bicycling insurance?
Check with your homeowners or rental policy before you decide to keep the car ins.

Insurance for damage and injuries you cause others with a bicycle would be covered by Homeowners/renters insurance and your personal umbrella coverage.
The auto policy may cover you if you are injured depending on the state laws.

I've heard it is cheaper in the long run to reduce your coverage (i.e. monthly payment) to as low as possible without canceling the policy. Otherwise, your policy (and the cash you've paid into it) may be reset when you re-apply for coverage and you'll pay a higher rate. This would mean dropping your comprehensive and any add-ons, reducing your liability coverage, and increasing your deductible.

Well then, that would confirm my personal theory....
They raise it if you have a crash,
they raise it if you don't have a crash, and finally,
they raise it if you get rid of it, and then later want it back.
I'm in the wrong dang line of work, I tell ya.....

If a car hits you his insurance company is supposed to cover you,If you smash into someones door their coverage(comprehensive or full) covers them(if you do damage a car they can try to sue you for their deductible)
Bicycles are not motor vehicles that normally arent a high speed vehicle.

Bob Mionske's Book Bicycling and the Law points out that in states with PIP laws, car insurance with PIP covers you for medical costs incurred from a collision with a motorist while bicycling.
the PIP of the motorist pays out first (regardless of fault) if they have PIP. Your PIP medical coverage coverage kicks in after the motorist's PIP limit is reached or if they have no PIP coverage.
This is car insurance covering you as a bicyclist after a collision with a motorist.

Well, ignorence strikes again. In Florida, the no fault autoinsurance covers you when you are riding a bike and get hit by a car. It happened to me so I know from personal experience.
Rather than ask a bunch of keyboard commandos, why not pose the question to your insurance agent. Mine was always helpful.

Definitely true - from personal experience. I went 7 years without a car. Not that I didn't drive though. I drove an 18-wheeler. Until I showed that I was insured by company policy and W2s it was way up there and I'd been doing 150k + miles a year.

Bicycling specific policy in the states? Not that I've ever found (except for manufacturers and dealers). It is folded in to both a home owners/renters policy (liability) and you auto policy (personal injury). I have seen ads for the UK for bike specific insurance though.
I'd think that there would be a great market here in the states for a bike specific policy though - I'd definitely have one.
