Hi everyone

I just graduated from UC Irvine and I am starting a job at UCSD. I'd like to meet up with some of the local cyclists around here, so I'm probably going to do the SDBC ride this saturday. Who here rides in the area? I'd like to find some riding partners.

I'm in UTC area, as well as Jschen and Indolent. I think Indolent is the one that rides the most consistently between us 3. Jschen has been busy; and for me I've only recently started biking to work.

There's also the MIA Mr. Phat.

I ride the SDBC ride sometimes, but I won't be there this weekend as I have a lunch time engagement. If you're the boy racer type though, I highly recommend checking out the San Diego Velodrome. I'm there every Tuesday night that I'm in town. If you're free on July 12th, check out Chez Indolent.

did you guys all post your commutes anywhere?Nope, I only started commuting frequently. I live in UTC and work in Sorrento Valley, so it's a short ride (12 miles round trip).

Out: Nobel->Regents->Genesee->I-5->Sorrento Valley->Lusk
Back: Pac Heights->Carroll Canyon->Camino Santa Fe->Miramar->Nobel

If you see a guy riding a road bike at crawling speed, cycling shorts & jersey and a medium-sized backpack, that may be me. :D

Alas, I got sick and couldn't go today :( My voice is currently on haitus....

I'm pretty damn determined to make it out to the SDBC ride next saturday. I'll be in a UC Irvine kit and I'm pretty tall for a cyclist. I shouldn't be too hard to spot.

really? the longer I go without driving, the less I want to do it.

I had to go to our admin office to take care of some stuff, and its only like a mile away, but I REEEEEEALLY didn't want to walk OR drive. so...yeah.

and the rest, as they say, is delirium.

What's the D1 ride like? What type of pace/length/etc? I've looked on their website, but they don't really go into the development rides too much, do they have any other D level rides on a weekly basis? (is Sat or Sunday better for the D rides?)
Thanks,
Chris

DaveSANYYZ

SDBC's D1 has the same route as B.

Sometimes it is longer because people riding the D1 don't kill themselves as much and so more can do the ~3 miles "Stud Loop"; whereas on the B, less people do the optional loop.

The B's start off faster than the D1, and maintains the speed to the end; whereas D1's cruising speed drops off later on in the ride. D1 used to be called "C++".

SDBC's Sunday ride is midway between B and D1 speed-wise. There's only 1 group, and the route used to be decided by the group lead at the start of the ride. Not sure how it is now.

Sorry to revive a month-old thread like this but I'm starting to get pretty excited about moving down to UCSD this coming fall for school. I'm from San Francisco and finding a group to ride with has been pretty hard to fit into my schedule with school and such. SDBC looks like a pretty awesome opportunity to meet some fellow bicyclists.

I was just wondering how necessary it is to start out in D3 as I haven't ridden with a group before. Also, what's a good group to ride with on weekdays? The only club that's close by to UCSD is Swamis and they seem a bit too hardcore for me. Thanks in advance. Really looking forward to riding with some of you guys in the future. :D

DaveSANYYZ
08-19-08, 01:37 PM
The SDBC rides do double-rotating paceline. If you don't know how, it's probably best to stick with the D3 for the first time. After you've learned the basics which is near the first 1/3 of the route, you can always split and ride solo if you find it too slow. Hey, it's just 1 ride. :)

Not sure about weekday rides. I've heard of Tues/Thurs lunch time bike rides that start at the Performance Store in Sorrento Valley, though it may be too far for you.

Welcome to the area. If you're a student at UCSD you can join their club and /or cycling team. Everyone converges upon UC Cyclery at around 8 or 8:15 and all the rides leave from there at 8:30. If you see a really tall guy in a UC Irvine jersey, be sure to say hi.

MiqueMaus
08-20-08, 04:23 PM
They have a cycling club? The cycling team itself doesn't seem as active as I had hoped. Most of the riders, most of whom don't race, appear to be grad students who race Collegiate A and I'm predicting I'll be having a tough time in C. I'll definitely be watching for BF people when I get down there. Hopefully my first SDBC weekend ride will be September 27th. I could probably try the 21st but it seems anti-social to go off cycling instead of meeting fellow undergrads on my second day of college. :D

What gives you that impression of the UCSD Cycling Team? Some of them race down at the San Diego Velodrome on Tuesday nights. I believe they also have a coach who works with them. One of the riders used to occasionally post on here. They seem to have two websites, for extra confusion:
http://recadmin.ucsd.edu/sports/teams/cycling/index.php
http://ucsdcycling.org/

If you're interested in racing, joining the UCSD Cycling Team is a great option as you'll get to race in the Collegiate circuit.

Here's some information on Cyclo-Vets rides.

Yup. Most things at UCSD seem pretty convoluted and chaotic. My friends at other colleges will be starting classes before I even find out where I will be housed. Granted, we start a month later but they've known for quite some time.

I checked race results for the Western Collegiate Cycling Conference and UCSD has a couple of older guys racing A, and 1-2 guys who sometimes show up in C. Slightly stronger showing for events inside of San Diego so that's a small bright spot.

I'm just giddy to get down there because I'll actually have time to ride without having to go to work everyday with a good hour or two in transportation. No point thinking about racing when I can't even get out and ride more than 2-3 times a week right now.

Anywho, anyone ever check out the UCSD Bike Shop on campus? I have a feeling my bike will get roughed up in the car on the long drive down since my dad is a pretty horrendous driver and might need some tuning. I could always run over to UC Cyclery as many of you guys have said good things about them.

How fast is the A ride?

I have only done the B ride so I'm just curios how much faster the A ride is.

DaveSANYYZ
08-21-08, 02:57 PM
Quite a bit faster. There's a small hill after turning left under I-805 near the start of the ride. With the 'B', I can hang in the front, and the whole pack goes into recovery mode after the flat. With the 'A', to me it feels like there's no recovery (because it's just a small warmup for them), and it just picks up from there... which is where I got dropped on the 'A' ride. :p

Crash716
08-21-08, 03:07 PM
the A ride averages 20mph even with the climbing, on the flats the average was usually 28+ with some 5-10 minutes areas in upwards of 35 mph.

show up and try....if you don't hang try the B group for a bit more and come back...there are break in the A ride...you just have to hold on and pray you make it to them.

Try the Champions ride at Fiesta Island on thursday nights at 6pm. If you can hang the whole time for that hour (28mph average) you should be fine in the A group.

That's about how often I actually ride, and I race every week at the Velodrome. I don't win these training races, but I have "fun." Just go out and do it. You'll find out where you stand, and what you have to do to improve.
