Mountain - Plains - Cycling Around Guernsey Reservoir, WY

Hi there:

We are going car camping with some friends on Guernsey Reservoir in Wyoming. We live in Denver, and our friends said this place is never crowded. After looking at a map, I am beginning to understand the cause there.

Anyway, since there won't be much hiking there, I am hoping to bring my road bike to get some exercise. Has anyone ridden the plains around there? I see some rural routes, but can't find much information.

I see this question was a few days old, but figured I'd chime in. There are a few decent roads in the park to ride on, but a fair bit of the park is gravel roads and trails. I do know a few years back they had a road race that went through the park, Hartville, and Guernsey for a couple of circuts depending on the class you were racing. depending on how much distance your looking for a loop from Guernsey out the south Guernsey highway to Greyrocks road, (Wheatland is about 6 miles south from this point) to highway 320 then north to highway 26, and east back to Guernsey should give you a loop of about 60-70 miles.

Thanks. We are leaving tomorrow morning, so that is great timing. 60-70 miles is just fine.

It turned out that we had too much stuff to haul up there, and ended up leaving the bikes behind to make room for the kayaks. I think that was for the best, since it was hot during the day and stormy (my tent rated to 80 MPH winds got flattened one evening).

I did think that the roads out towards Register Rock looked ok for cycling, but it was 100 degrees and windy. I definitely missed cycling for the weekend, but I didn't feel that I missed cycling where we were. I am just a wimpy Coloradan ;)

That road that goes out past register cliff is the South Guernsey highway. As you go further south the scenery goes away, and you get exposed to the wind more especially the last 3 or 4 miles before turning off onto Greyrocks road.
