I could easily. I hate the f$#king things. Always ring when your in the middle of something (like a ride, I usually don't take mine when riding now for that reason) or if you leave them at home or even just out of earshot for just 5 mins you will get missed calls even though you aren't expecting any and no one has rung you for a week.

They have their uses, like when you have broken down somewhere and you can call a friend/family member or garage/auto club to come and rescue you but a lot of people (especially young teenage girls) seem to think it is mandantory to talk/text on them 24/7 regardless of where they are or who they are with. It's not as if they are making/receiving some very important call that just can't wait. From the conversations I've overheard (can't help but overhear, people yell into them, even while standing next to you in a crowded lift) it is just inane stuff that could easily wait until the caller and callee meet up again (they've been apart like a whole 5 mins...).

I could rave on for ever about the loathe I have for cell phones...

Rave away!

I have one. It's on a pay-as-you-go arrangement (which means Telstra, like most telcos, steals my money when the top-up expires). I currently don't have any top-up on it because I am not expecting to use it into the foreseeable future. Whcih means I can't call out and I can't receive messages. All good!

I survived a long time with NO phone in my home. I used to cycle to a public phone box to call my girlfriend (international calls) and use my PocketMail for my emails. Then I got a laptop computer and have a landline for dail-up, but I don't use it for voice calls except to talk to my girlfriend. If anyone wants to communicate with me, they do it by email.

Not having a phone or a mobile can catch you out, though. I went to hire a car, but forgot my driver's licence. I had hired from the guy before, and he was prepared to check my mobile/cell phone number was legit in lieu of the licence. He called the number, then hung up when I pointed out it probably wouldn't answer because it wasn't topped up. "Sorry, no licence, no phone. no rent you a car." I came back the next day with my licence and the phone with $15 worth of activity booked in.

Guess, we'll never know since it sets in a drawer unusued.

I couldn't do much without it. I run my business through it.

As far as it being an appliance, I think it's a rude device. Mainly when you are having a conversation with some one, face to face, their phone rings and they just answer it, putting you on hold. Normally I walk away. My phone will never interrupt my human conversation with someone.

As far as on a ride, I use that little button that shuts it off. If it weren't for my business activity through my phone, I would only turn it on to make a call, then off when I'm done.

I could, but the battery in it is a great way to start the campfire.
And the GPS really is nice for finding water sources. The led flash for the camera is an ok signaling device too. So, I could survive without it, but it does have some nice features that make it easier.

Absolutely not. With 25+ emails a day in my personal inbox alone, it would be tough to not be on top of them.

Plus, how else are you supposed to talk to women now a days????

'Screen works well as a flashlight also.

I get way more than 25 E-Mails a day, but just read them on my laptop.

Actually my wife and I use it for texting more than a phone.

Don't own one, had one for a couple years (on the "pay as you go card" plan just for emergencies). Used it around 10 times (never for an emergency), had no use for it really. Once told a former boss my thoughts on them, she looked at me like I had two heads. I also don't wear a watch, and yet I'm the most on-time person I know.

When I ride I take the wifey's cell.

But yes, as I'm writing this I'm proving that I'm alive, thus confirming your premise.:p

I survived 14 years without one(my last cell phone was a brick phone), but it drove my friends nuts. They paid for the 1st year of a 2yr plan, as a gift. They were tired of not being able to reach me, and were insulted by my "I'll call you, if I want to talk to you" attitude.

Last week a drunk girl dropped my phone into Lake Mead. I actually missed having it.

I don't like to spend much time at home, but noticed that I do enjoy talking with my friends(and have many of them living all over the country). Free long distance calling and the ability to reach friends(and be reached by them)while out and about, is a big plus.

BTW, my employer + co-workers, don't have my ph#(and never will).

hell ya. I have one for work, period.

I don't have any friends who live locally, so the free long distance is what keeps me sane.

It is my only phone.

my only phone is a cell phone, so no, I couldn't. I don't have a land line and I don't have home internet. My cell is my only link.

I have to have one for work. However if I get another job that doesn't require one I could live without one but would probably keep one. When I was in college I used pay phones and phone cards all the time, but pay phones are going away fast in my area, so I would probably keep a cell phone.

..especially when it rings at 1AM on worknights by drunk friends. I'm on the coffee today.

I get calls from Foosters from all over the United States. If I didn't have a cell it would be hard (and expensive) to keep contact with you guys.

But other than that, I would LOVE to not have a cell. It would be a good excuse for work to not call me with a problem. :D

The battery in mine is shot. It only works when attached to the car charger, and dies within a few seconds of being unplugged. I'm waiting for my contract to expire rather than put any money into it.

I hate the damnable things too.

I've had one for nearly ten years now, and while it was handy for work on remote jobsites, the cell coverage in this rural part of Colorado sucks and I'd usually end up missing the call anyway. I still carry it out of legacy as much as need.

When I was kicked out of the house after the divorce, it was my only phone for a while. No, not by choice but due to the local phone company's ineptitude: it took them 5 months to get my land line switched to a new location! Things got so tough that I moved in with my folks for a while...and they gave away the phone number I'd had since moving to Colorado.

My life is still land lines, both at home (mostly for DSL) and at the shop. The cell comes in handy when the line is tied up with the credit card machine and I need to call a customer. The only people that call me on my cell are my wife to yank my chain about when I'll be home, and my ex wife about money. Yes, I could live without it...but it is handy for when I'm traveling or riding.

Can you hear me now?

I carry one and have been doing so for many years. But I rarely use it. When it rings, it's usually a wrong number. I could survive without it.

The thing is, in business, most everyone must have one to level the playing field. Back when no one had cell phones the playing field was also even.....except for those who carried pagers....they always got the first sales calls.

I didn't even have a personal one until 2 years ago, when the wife forced it on me because she worried about me riding alone all the time.

I like being out of touch once in a while. I once quit a job because they insisted on me carrying a Blackberry. Well..... that, and I hated the management team.

I got rid of my cellphone two months ago and couldnt be happier. I was sick and tired of hundred some odd dollar phone bills. Do they think I'm an idiot? I hear people all the time say they have to have one. Not true, no matter what you do. There isnt anyone alive doing something (with a cellphone at their side) that wasnt done 20 years ago without a cellphone. Sure, it's conveniant, but so is driving a car everywhere ya want to go. Someday when the companies are not screwing everyone and there is an across the board flat fee (that is not a rip-off like the 99 dollar flat fees some are starting to offer) I may get one again, but for now, I will not be a part of their game.

I didn't have one of my own until a year or so ago. Even now I rarely use it, and no one calls me, so if it went away, I could deal. Only reason I keep it is that it's occasionally useful, and it's only costing me $15 a month. If I had to pay the $60 or whatever the base plans go for these days, I doubt I'd bother.

"Could I" ? Are you kidding? I try to survive without it. I never turn it on unless I know I'm expecting a call, and the only reason I even carry one with me is in case of emergencies.

We survived as a species for tens of thousands of years without cell phones, and I survived perfectly well as an individual for ~35 years before I even got my first one. 99% of the time they are a pointless luxury. I hate them.

First of all, it wasn't meant to be an insult. Apologies if you took it as such for I don't play that way. If it was, I'd do it in PM.

Second of all, what does pink boyz (who I don't hang out with anymore) have to do with insults?

I got one after I fell off my bike, tore an ACL, and cracked a tibia. I was right at the entrance to my apartment building, and managed to hobble the rest of the way leaning on the bike, but what if it had happened out in the middle of nowhere???? I can keep the phone active for as little as $10/year.

I use my phone for a number of things, although its becoming time to replace it. T-Mobile really needs a kick in the pants for their Windows Mobile device selection. You have one slider which has an long in the tooth 200 mhz TI OMAP, a Windows Smartphone with the same chip and a Blackberry-like keyboard, then the Shadow, which has a new UI, but more of something for the Sidekick market than a real WM device. Something like the HTC Touch Pro would be nice, or the HTC Universal.

I have one but don't really use it on a daily basis. When I had a day job last winter I used it most days to talk to my boss(es), or for them to reach me.

But it's the phone number I use for everything related to my photography, so people call me about that sometimes.

I use a pre-paid plan with Alltel. Works great around here, but when I went to California it wouldn't allow me to make outgoing calls. I got in touch with their support and they couldn't figure out why. Then they called me a month later to see if I was still having the problem, of course I only stayed there for a week and I was back home by then.

I wouldn't mind having a unit with a GPS built in, or one that let me transfer pictures from it to the computer (mine has a camera but they're stuck on the phone's memory as far as I can tell)

Meh...I went two months with no personal phone at all before my mom guilt tripped me into getting one. I'd previously gone periods of several weeks multiple times.

It'd be a piece of cake.
