Foo - no bird is a match for a airsoft gun

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.

If you're walking or bicycling around the city and see a bird that looks like the one in the above photo, you best start heading in the opposite direction. It's a red-winged blackbird, it's nesting, and it's a mean SOB. Get just a wee bit too close to its nest, and you're likely to feel a pecking and/or clawing at your head.
It happened to Holly Grosso. The businesswoman was on her cell phone, walking along West Grand Avenue near Rockwell Street on Wednesday, when the bird—dubbed "Hitchcock" by area workers—made its move.
"Something just came down, pecked me in the head, took my hair and started flying away," she said. "It's so bizarre. It's this little bird."
The birds especially like to go after bikers, with a report of one bird getting so aggressive a person lost control of their bike and fell on the sidewalk -- which would be a shoo-in winner on America's Funniest Home Videos.
Has anyone here had a run in with one of these *******s?

No bird? Try it on a bald eagle. :D
And by the way, I've never had a problem with those things, but I don't get how in the world somebody could be such a pansy that they would get beat down by a tiny bird. Grow a pair, grab it, and smash it.

Just to let everyone know--Red-winged Blackbirds are native migratory birds and thus come under the jurisdiction of the Federal Migratory Bird Treaty Act, a formal treaty with Canada and Mexico. Blackbirds are protected by Federal law (Title 50, Code of Federal Regulations, Part 21.43).
No, you don't get to kill them.

That remarkably corrupt federal government, along with the equally corrupt goverments of Canada and Mexico, is why there are still songbirds out there for Americans to enjoy. The treaty also covers birds such as ducks...geese....etc.

Hunters are the main reason that endangered animals of many types have made huge comebacks. Through self imposed fees and killing overpopulated species that cause problems, we have done a whole lot to keep nature balanced. But one thing almost any hunter will tell you is that if they are attacked by wildlife they will fight back. I'm of that mindset myself.

Please, you don't need to tell me about hunters.
The treaty was signed due to the devastation wrought upon species such as the snowy egret, which were being wiped out.
Hunters were not nearly so magnanimous years ago:

The birds are defending their nest. If you kill the one bird, you also possibly kill all the nestlings as well, by removing one parent from the job of feeding the young.

As for a beak poking out an eye, you'd must be not using it much if he can get that close to your face. So what difference would it make?

The people who remember the days when hunting without limit was legal and nearly drove such species as Michigan white tails to extinction are pretty much extinct themselves. Those days are LONG gone, as is noted in your link. The current generation of outdoorsmen has been fixing the 80+ year old screw up, and doing a good job at it.
As for these birds, I've never been attacked by one so I don't even see the problem, but I'm not about to regret killing a jack ass at the risk of some jack ass off spring also dying. For all I know a crazed bird could have any number of diseases, like rabies. Is it insensitive of me to put my safety ahead of the life of some brats? Maybe, but that's how I am, and I am not alone by any means.

If people have to shoot something, they should go find a flock of starlings or house sparrows (introduced pests.)
I've been dive bombed by a hummingbird (male rufous) that didn't like me getting too close to some salmonberry in bloom. It was on my own property where I can legally discharge a firearm, but I was somehow able to resist any temptation to blow it to shreds. Must be my ripe old age of "over 13."

Not much of a bird hunter, no. Nor am I a scientist. Every bird I have killed I have chopped its head off first thing when I gutted it, or left it uncaringly in the case of crows. Thank you for the science lesson though. Upon google searching I did find out that there is a fairly long list of diseases that birds can transmit. They are called zoonic diseases.
The fact remains that my safety is more important to me than a bird. A small degree of carelessness combined with a defective firearm cost me the ability to walk for 6 weeks. Am I going to even more recklessly risk getting sick or losing an eye to protect a jack ass bird? No way. In this country we have an absolute right to self defense, and I am one who exercises it.

A - Proof that the disease is spreading
B - Armed and ready for what? Invasion of foreign automakers with higher MPG models? Sorry, too late.
C - I have no problem. It makes perfect sense that when you view everyone and everything as a potential threat, you would view guns as the answer. Only problem is, if guns are the answer, then what's the question? If it's "are you paranoid?" the answer surely is "yes".
You may want to view an earlier thread I started about my battle with the local rabbit population. Notice, in particular, the humorous tone. You may want to adopt it, humor adds years to your life.

I love the sound of red-winged blackbirds. Every place I fish, I hear them and I'm reminded why I enjoy being outdoors.
Also enjoy the sight of a red-tailed hawk taking out a sparrow or some such. The hawks around here are usually being chased off by (standard) blackbirds, though--they're tough SOB's.

An apathetic and defenseless freedom hater in the PRI? How shocking.
By the way, if you know anything about me, you should know that I am a staunch advocate of a lot of different methods of saving fuel with efficient methods of transportation.
The marines have a slogan that goes something like be polite, be professional, have a plan to kill everyone you meet. I've never had a need to kill a pest bird for attacking me, but I certainly have plan to, and no, that plan need not involve guns. As I said, a bird that small may be smashed pretty darn easily by hand.

Incorrect.
Not sure what PRI means, I'm sure it's quite clever though, based on your earlier responses.
Having a "plan" to kill a "pest bird"? Just plain bizarre. I have a plan to enjoy my life. I like my plan better.
Remember, guns don't kill. Lunatics and miscreants do (and sometimes, yes, they squash pest birds with their bare hands.)
You know, they're doing great things with anti-depressants these days. I'm sure your foster parents are quite proud of you.

I realize I've been pretty harsh, Michigander, and for that I apologize. In all seriousness, it does seem like you might be suffering from PTSD or some other issues from your tours of duty in Iraq with the Marines. I know the VA isn't really doing all they can for patients with psychological issues, but see what's available, and best of luck to you.
Had a pair of chickadees nest in my backyard a few years ago. Cute little perky birds -- and my mother came running in the house more than once as the bird would buzz her head when out by the flowers. And sure enough - I go look outside and there it is beotching up a storm on the clothesline waiting for for Mom to come back that way again.:)

PRI means peoples republic of Illinois. I can't stand that state. Arizona is one of the most freedom bound states in the union, whereas Illinois is one of the most oppressive states in the union. I never was in the Marines, I was only quoting them. No, I am not depressed, I am rather happy.
Sledbikes, you must be confused. If I remember right, AA12's didn't come out until 1988, and so none were put into the civilian eligible registry. If I am wrong, and a few were made and registered before 86, I can say without a doubt that they would fetch at least $30,000. But I'm pretty sure none were, because I've never seen them for sale.

A red tail typically has a wing span of about 4 feet, maybe 5 on the very outside. But when you piss one off it's sure to look like 6 or 7 feet!

I think you knew that too, so why did you say it?
I own no "commando gear". I find that tacticool **** stupid and useless.
The reason I never did enlist is that I find the actions of the military to currently be counterproductive to the safety and well being of the military itself as well as the entire US population. Not to mention all the money it has wasted. I do not want that on my conscience, and that is why I am not soldier material. The ability to take any order, no matter how stupid and wrong, is not a trait I possess.
By the way, how do I go about putting my money where my mouth is? What does that mean?
