Very tough to decide, all similarly powered, similarly equipped.

Anyone have one of these?

We (my family) have a 1993 Acura (Honda) Legend at 202K miles that runs splendidly (except for a seeping HG issue, which is due to fix).

We also have a 1999.5 Nissan Pathfinder LE that has been giving us issues, mostly with the transmission, since about 2003. It has about 175K miles on the ticker now.

Finally, we have a 2005 Lexus ES330 that has been trouble-free so far. However, it's used in limited portions, meaning it's not expected to go through the rough. About 30K miles on it.

My uncle had a 1990 Toyota Camry that lasted his family until about 1999 or 2000. It still worked well when they traded it off for another Toyota.

I don't know anything about Mazdas.

I've loved my Accords over the years, but the new one lost some of its driving spirit. They used to be a bit more sporty, but the new one drives more like the Camry. The Altima is probably the best drivers car now of the group.

That's really surprising! From what I saw, they redesigned their coupe so that it was sportier...that sucks to hear.

The Altimas are definitely impressive, but I don't think I could get another Nissan unless it's cheap; the common cars depreciate extremely fast, and the parts wear at about the same rate.

Go over to Freysinger's and talk to Hector at Mazda. I don't know if Faulkner has the same maintenance deal, but I have been very satisfied both by the program and the service at Freysinger's. My CX-7 drives circles around just about anything else I've ever driven, and it's a crossover. Daughter has a Mazda 3 and loves it too. 6 is a little nicer than the 3. If you haven't driven one, I'd suggest doing so.

Out of those, a Toyota. But I wouldn't buy any of those options to start with.

If i had to pick from that list, i'd go with the Mazda 6.

If i could branch out a bit, i'd go for a Subaru Legacy.

Hmmm, Mazda seems very motivated to get rid of the '08's. I suppose the 09 model change has something to do with that...

Where's the option for a Hayabusa?

Since the car was for my wife, I didn't think to add it :o

Since the poll is in Foo, it's now in the realm of possibilities. :thumb:

Equally equipped cars for roughly equal prices...

Why wasn't there a "throw the dice" option?

Other than the "I like the looks" or the unsubstantiated "Brand Z is better" what is the real difference?

I'll tell you. You have to ask one additional question... Which one offers the best color?

Doh! Probably explained somewhere in the thread, which I obviously did not read. Given what you've stated, I'd go with the Accord. Nice car and extremely dependable. Maintenance costs aren't too bad either. I'm basing this on my Honda Civic which I have been very pleased with and a freinds Accord that is really very nice.

Get one of these fine machines.

Heck, it even says it's a car right on the side. But no just any car.... Le Car.

Amazing what a little engineering will do to a car.

My mom bought one of those new around the time of the gas crunch in '79. Traded in a '73 Mercury with a 400 cu in engine to get it. :( It was white too.

Don't know about the coupe. I drove the sedan (kids and all). The coupe does look great though!

but more importantly, have you checked consumer reports? that's what sealed the deal for me.

Thanks for the replies. We have been looking for a while since our primary vehicle developed an engine knock. Gotta love those Fords :( . I never did like that van.

Our family is in a transition right now and we no longer need the big people mover. So once the decision was made to junk the Ford, our next stop was the Mazda dealer. I really liked the Mazda3 appearance, and I thought that sized car might work but my wife thought it too small. So we were looking at mid-sized sedans. This would be my wife's daily driver, I try to ride my bike to work as much as possible.

At the time I posted this, the poll results are as follows:
2008 Honda Accord 8 25.00%
2008 Nissan Altima 2.5S 5 15.63%
2009 Toyota Camry CE 5 15.63%
2008 Mazda mazda6 9 28.13%

Here are my thoughts on what we found:

Mazda 6

We took out the Mazda 6 on a drive and my wife disliked it for much of the same reasons I liked it. She thought it rode too rough and was too noisy.Since the mazda 6 comes with 17inch alloy wheels and low sidewall height, it would seem to give a good road feel at the expense of ride quality. She also didn't like the layout of the display. I liked the mp3 playback capability and the 5 disk changer was a bonus.

The mazda 6 had the lowest projected reliabilty and the lowest projected residual value. Still, I think mazda is underrated.

Current offers were 0% financing or 2250 rebate.

Toyota Camry

Camry was a strong performer, had nice ride quality and was nicely equipped. It did nothing poorly and nothing exceptionally well. The dealer quickly presented a pretty aggressively discounted price, but had no factory rebates or competitive financing.

Nissan Altima

I'm a Nissan Fan. I really like the way this car looked. I thought the CVT was very cool too. The car rode well and was very comfortable. It was a touch pricier than the Toyota and Honda.

However, I wasn't interested in getting a 3.5 V6 because of the cost and the 2.5 I4 hasn't had a stellar reliability reputation.

Honda Accord

Yeah. Ride and performance was boringly Camry-like. But it edged ahead with standard features (mp3 playback) and it acts like a big car. I like the styling much more than Camry. So that's what we bought. I should mention that when I checked this poll just before arranging the deal last night, Honda was ahead by 1 point. ;)

As a bonus, my mother-in-law, who is handicapped (but not wheelchair bound), would probably find entering and exiting this vehicle easier due to the wide door opening and tall roof.

I had gotten internet quotes for each of the 4 vehicles at differing dealers than we had test drove, so I thought I walked into the Honda dealer pretty well prepared. Their first offer was pretty laughable and I told them so. Then they decided that we deserved the special "Hershey Employee" discount and was much closer than the quote I had. I told them that I thought that they deserved first shot since I test drove the car there and these other guys only sent an email. The next offer beat the internet price by $250, so I took it. I did get a lecture on how little money they were making, etc. But it's pretty much BS. I calculate they made 3% on the transaction by the time the dealer holdbacks come in.
