I've just put my order in for an '09 Specialized SL2 frameset and I need to know what, if any, cranksets are out there to fit this bike. The frame uses an integrated BB so I imagine that my choices are limited. I will either contact Specialized or talk to the guys at the shop but I'm wondering if I can remove their BB and run regular cups. I've seen their crankset and it looks great but I really just want to run my Dura Ace stuff.
So, if you know anything about the SL2 frame and the integrated BB I'd love to hear from you.
BTW...my frame looks like this.

Are you getting the Module, or just the frameset? The Module will have the proprietary BB arrangement intended for the Specialized composite crankset (but you can get inserts to use off-the-shelf BBs if you like). The plain SL2 frameset, however, should have a threaded BB just like a regular frame. That's based off my knowledge of last year's S-Works stuff, so check with your dealer or with Specialized to get it written in stone :)

I'm getting the frameset, not the module, so no bearings/crank. I'm hoping to run my Dura Ace gear so I guess I'll shoot off a note to Specialized and ask them.

If that frame is exactly what you are getting you are getting a standard english bb. The only people that install the Spec. cranks and bb are Specialized. (I think.) I'm pretty sure you can only buy the cranks if you're getting them bolted straight to your frame. And, in the picture you can see the extra bits of aluminum that they would machine out for their larger cups. Yay for proprietary components!

Yep...Diggidy is right. I contacted Specialized and they confirmed that if you get the module it comes with the BB30 components installed. If you order the frameset you get 68mm English BB. That Specialized crankset may be the second coming but I know one thing for sure...Dura Ace has always done good by me!

The Specialized cranksets I saw on last year's S-Works were a mixed bag. Light, stiff, but the rings were flexy and had slippage issues, to the point where Specialized was reimbursing us to give the customers Dura-Ace rings as replacements. And the chainring bolts were fragile. I'd take Dura-Ace too :)

Just talk to my local bike shop, he told me that the 2009 Tarmac s-works SL2 frameset only takes BB30 crankset and could only get it from FSA.

Time for you to find a new mechanic. Those Specialized cranks are expensive! The Dura Ace Crank and cups that I installed worked just great last night. According to Specialized you can run English threaded BB cups on the frame. That what Gerolsteiner is doing in the Tour this year, Specialized frame with Dura Ace SRM cranks and BB cups.

I hope you dig your bike as much as I do. My old Tarmac was quick...this thing is just plain fast. I've only gotten a handful of rides in on it so far and each time my average speed is higher, to the point that right now I'm nearly 2 mph faster over routes that I've been riding for years. I still think that part of that could be due to me riding harder because I'm on a new toy but I'll take it whatever the reason.
BTW...you're going to need a chain before you leave the garage! Looks good though...
