Given the fact she made her own stencils and only a few bikes, had the spray equipment, maybe airbrushing would have been more practical.

I looked into this extensively last year. Unless you're willing to order a coupled hundred dollars worth of decals, your options are limited. SSSink (http://www.sssink.com/) probably does the best job, but... they don't answer emails promptly (use the phone instead), and they won't sell you just one or two decals. Everybody else is, basically, selling stickers: they're very thick and the adhesive seems pretty cruddy (based on the samples I got). If you go this route, I'd order a bunch of stickers since most don't look like they'd last more than a week.
At this point, I'm wondering if the best option for a one-off bike isn't to just hire a painter. Seems like it should be pretty easy to shoot some lettering through a stencil and then spray a clear coat over it...
P.S. If you find someone that does good work at a reasonable price, please let us know!

Of the sticker places, 123stickers.com (http://www.123stickers.com/) seemed to be the cheapest. They also do small quantities and offer free die-cutting. I think I got some samples from them, but don't remember for sure. Lots of places will send you samples for free if you e-mail them.
BTW, Victory Circle Graphix does custom name decals for your tubes or wheels. You get to chose colors and fonts. Prices are $15-25 for 4-10 stickers. As stickers go, they're pretty nice! But if you want Victory Circle to do anything larger, their prices are pretty high (at least when I checked). They're somewhat responsive to e-mail, but if you want a custom quote you may be better off calling them.
