Hey, I remember seeing a V/W photofinish picture of Davis Phinney in the Tour de Trump. I think it was a crit in Allentown, PA or some such area. Great picture showing a bike-lunge with his arms horizontal and chin on the saddle. The background was smeared due to panning. The picture showed him winning by 2cm! Anyone have a copy of this picture?

That was probably when he rode for Coors Light and climbed aboard the Motorola train. I believe it was an uphill finish and he probably nipped Phil Anderson. I remember the stage but haven't seen photos. It was when STI shifting was brand new and he credited it.

Nope. but I'm a fan of photo finishes. I had a t-shirt made out of this one.

And a nit about the background. It's not blurred. Modern photo finish "cameras" are actually capturing a strip that's only 3 pixels wide (red, green and blue) and is aimed directly along the front edge of the white finish line. So the distortions you see are due to the differing positions of spokes etc as they cross the line, and the moving shadows messing with the exposure.

The vertical line you see in this one was added later with the viewing software to clearly distinguish which rider won (Peter Weening, Stage 8 2005 TdF).

I'm always amazed when I see someone arguing with a photo-finish camera. "But I was coming up much faster than that guy!"

Go to www.phoenix-sports.com and ask them nicely if they have it. They were the ones who shot it. They've done all the big events since the dawn of time, though not always under that DBA.

It wouldn't surprise me if they have it. Or at least know which finish you're talking about. Gypsy is an encyclopedia.

I was surprised when Eddy B. was arguing the same thing. We were at a stage race in CO and he didn't understand how those cameras worked. We straightened him out eventually.

...

Happens when they're closing on the lead guy very quickly, even pass him after the finish line, which gives them that impression, not realizing that he was at the finish line first.

I think the Mike Neal, Roger Young 10 mile finish is the classic of all finish photos. It also marked a turning point in American cycling. When I was racing back in the 70's it was typical to have fields of 60 and 70 riders in the Junior catagory. In cat 1-2 even larger fields. I can remember doing warmups on the Northbrook track and we would have a string of riders that looped the entire track and 2000 plus people in the stands. Good times.

Those were shot on film by Gypsy. I still remember the smell of those chemicals.
As I recall in Baltimore, Davis went up with his hands and then yanked them back down unsure of the outcome. The crowd reaction was yeah! Oooohhh.

Very cool.
