I'd be interested to know if there are any Australians here who can give me some first hand information about the area where the ride is taking place - the Melbourne area.

Typical late-October weather?
Terrain?
Great things to see?

I toured in that area in November 2002. The Great Ocean Road is worth seeing in itself. The scenery 30km each side of Lorne is just spectacular. If you have time (I'm not sure this will be the case), the climb to Erskine Falls is a worthwhile deviation.

When in the Port Campbell region, there are a lot of things to see just off the road. Most people only visit the Twelve Apostles, but there is so much more to see in that area. Loch-Ard Gorge should be on the list - as should The Grotto and London Bridge.

The Grampians - I understand the route will be travelling through the Victoria Valley rather than up into the mountains themselves. That would be a worthwhile deviation from Halls Gap, but then, it's a time issue. If you do take this option, McKenzie Falls is definitely worth a visit.

Weather -- the days are usually quite a pleasant temperature at that time of year, although the nights and the mornings can get pretty cold (even dropping below freezing might be a possibility). It shouldn't rain too much, but you can never be certain in Victoria.

Wind -- Generally changes often (it never blew the same direction more than two days in a row when I was down there). Usually stronger from the south-west. Watch the cross-winds on the Great Ocean Road.
