Road Bike Racing - Am I training enough?

Bikeforums.net is a forum about nothing but bikes. Our community can help you find information about hard-to-find and localized information like bicycle tours, specialties like where in your area to have your recumbent bike serviced, or what are the best bicycle tires and seats for the activities you use your bike for.
Hey guys,
I had a few top ten's at the beginning of the season as a Cat 5. I did more than my share of Cat 5 races and then moved up to Cat 4. I got 5th in a local 3/4 crit but that's been about my only decent result since. Other than that my results have been pretty crappy. I've been training an average of about 7 hours a week. I worked with a coach last year and this year so my training plan is pretty organized. My coach recently got a real job and closed his coaching practice - so I don't have him as a resource any more.
My question is this: It's been pretty hard to carve out 7-8 hours a week to train having a wife, kid and job. How many hours a week would you think a 36 year old needs to be competitive in Cat 4?
Any suggestions are appreciated.

You can do it on 6 hours
It's likely race tactics more than fitness. Have you identified your limiters yet?

Get a PowerTap and either a coach or a training plan. I've heard of guys making due with 6 hours before because they train HARD in their allowed time of riding.

7-8 hours is plenty for the 4's here. Not sure about TX.

Yeah, 5-6 hours is fine for spanking cat-4s. The two most important days are: sprints and intervals. Don't waste time doing rides that are longer than your longest race.
Hey guys,
Thanks for your responses. I haven't identified my limiters. I've got the Cyclist Training Bible, I guess I could go through the worksheets and try to figure out where they are and build a training plan that addresses them. I tried doing this before getting a coach without great results. I don't have a power meter and have been using an HRM for training. Sounds like I should probably start saving for a power meter.
If I'm not going to have to train 12 hours to be competitive what should I be doing with an 8 hour week?

Definetely save for the power meter. Sift through Ebay and you'll find one.
As a training system, ask someone more knowledgeable.
What do you guys think about this weekly training schedule? I'm going to be using it through the end of August to prep for the Fall MTB Cup:

It looks like it's lacking intensity. I'd fit in 1m intervals, 5m intervals, and some 20m intervals, weekly. You can omit sprints if you do your 1m intervals "right" ;)
I'd convert 1/2 of the paced stuff to intensity.
