I am on the fence about buying a 605 or 705. Haven't thought much about heart monitor training etc. (does that stuff really work?) but my real question has to do with overall value. Can you use the 605 and the 705 models in your car as well? I assumme so but want to know for sure. If I can the Mrs. would be fine with the additional cost of the 705 since we could just bring it along on long car trips. If there are limitations to this then I will just have to focus on my hard core cycling needs and worry about a car navigtion system as the need arises. Thanks in advance for any advice you can offer.

1. Yes, the training features really work.
2. If you don't care about the training features, some of the Garmin Etrex units have the same mapping features as the Edge 705 with a much lower price.
3. If you are a real hard core cyclists, the limited battery life of the Edge 705 is an important issue. The Etrex units have a much longer battery life.

But will it function well enough in my car? That's my biggest question.
Training rides are usually 5-6 hours and the battery life is rated at 14 I believe. So even half that should be fine.
Thanks for the info.

Yes it will work in the car. Will it work in the car as well as say a Nuvi that is made for the car, no.
In order for it to work in your car you will need to buy the additional maps. The general consensus is to buy them on DVD and then copy them to your Edge. This way you can use your computer for route planning with full maps on it.
If you buy the SD card version then you will only have maps on your Edge as you cannot copy the SD card maps to your computer.

How would you ever mount it in your car?
